Every sideline reporter says this. After Michele Tafoya said that, then added, "I can't tell you how slowly (Jason Peters) is walking on the sideline," Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth laughed because Peters had to be carted off without putting any weight on his right leg. They suggested NFL teams just don't want people to know some things about player injuries when they use the word questionable. OK, I understand teams want to respect the privacy of their players, but it was obvious Peters had no chance of returning to the game. This happens frequently. Why don't teams rule out injured players immediately after standing on both feet is impossible? The Eagles did not rule Peters out of the game until halftime, which is ridiculous because he was injured in the first quarter. Every team does this but the stupidity of it was highlighted by Tafoya because she obviously knew Peters could not return to the game after seeing him walk on the sideline. (BTW Peters reportedly injured his lower back, not a leg.)

Because if a nerve is pinched, it's entirely possible that a person could be unable to stand initially, but after massaging it for a couple of minutes and stretching it out, that debilitating injury is suddenly no big deal.

 

Or, you know, they could have a broken spine. Teams don't know until they get them to the locker room. Hence, "questionable".

Only if pain is the reason a player can't walk under his own power. If a cart comes out, that definitely is not the reason for it.

What does not make any sense is even if a player still can't walk an hour after being helped off the field, the team still says he is questionable. At that point why does it matter what the injury is in terms of returning to the game? Miracles do happen in the NFL; I know that. But there is no reason to expect one if the player is carted off.

If you list him as "out" of the game, and a miracle happens and he is able to come back into the game, you will have to answer all kinds of questions about why you listed him as "out" and then proclaim him "eligible to return".

 

I'm not sure if once a player is listed as "out", if he is even able to come back in and play. Probably not, but I am not 100% sure of the rule.

When a player is ruled out, he is not eligible to return to the game. Of course even if he improves on the sideline, it would be a good idea to let him sit as a precaution, so I would never question a team's decision to rule him out.

Byron Leftwich once broke a bone in his leg and left the stadium to go to the hospital. He had to be helped into a minivan for the trip. He was back on the field before the game was over but had to have his Offensive Linemen carry him down the field between plays.

 

So yes, when his leg was broke and he couldn't walk without assistance his return was listed as "questionable".

If that was true they would say everyone is questionable no matter what their injuries are. Obviously many times players are ruled out a short time later and the sideline reporters have to say that.
