Caldwell pre-combine & FA thoughts

Quote:If TC disagrees with DC too much this offseason... DC might not make it through the 2017-2018 season....

but I'm not sure how much disagreeing would be made public until after the fact..

Absolutely. It wouldn't be revealed right now if they were butting heads but all indicators are that they are forging ahead effectively/cohesively and there's nothing to suggest otherwise.

Maybe DC was noncommittal on biggest need to keep all his FA/draft cards close to the vest...

I believe that to indeed be the case. ^

If Caldwell is smart and willing to humble himself and work hard, this could be a huge moment in his career if he turns things around. Most guys with his rap sheet got fired two months ago and won't ever be heard from again. At least Caldwell is still a GM, even if he's effectively an intern now.

I am simply curious as to why you believe Coughlin would have a different answer than Caldwell to the teams' greatest need after they just went over the whole roster together? I'm not trying to set you up by asking.

I mean, if they did have different answers at this point, that whole process of evaluation would be a total fail.

I realize that you also leave open the possibility of them agreeing on the answer -- I just think that at this point they must definitely agree on the answer or we're in for some trouble and/or shake-ups in the F.O.

An example of what I'd like to hear, and I do think the questions should continue to be asked, is whether or not TC or Marrone would add any positions to that list or give any indication of where those items might fit into a hierarchy. Those are the areas where there may be some variation. And of course, they probably aren't going to get into prospects besides commenting on specific questions about the individuals.

I look forward to hearing their collective comments in addition to these singular exchanges.

I think Dave is a whole lot more comfy with Bortles than the poobah is.

I think Dave says much nicer things about Bortles with a microphone in his face than he does in his office at Everbank.

I don't really care what anyone says out of all 3 of them (TC, DM or DC). I just want a season where I can be excited for a game in the mid/late season because we need it to be in the play offs or something like that. I am just tired of watching failure after failure.. I am a jags fan and all and I wouldn't support another team but I could see myself just getting bored with the NFL in general because of the Jaguars failing year in and year out. To be honest, I am not even going to get hyped up because that always leads to failure.. not including I just feel like this season is going to turn out miserably.. to many chiefs not enough Indians

Caldwell's Combine presser:

For those of you who are taking his comments on the team's biggest needs too seriously - this was the exchange:

Team's biggest need O-line?

DC: No

Edge?

DC: No. (laughing) Should we just keep going down the list?

here's the clip:

Exactly.

Doesn't really fit what Tom's done in the past.

That high, he's gone for more premium positions and RB. I still expect DL, CB, or RB as our first pick, even if we trade out.

From Caldwell's chat with Oehser and Shadrick:

http://www.jaguars.com/media-gallery/vid...e50c45f363

How do you build around Blake?

I think a lot of it is going to come schematically. Nathaniel Hackett, I think has really got a great plan for him. Coach Milanovich is going to do some good things Blake, and I think the "rising tide raises all ships" with our receiving corps, our running game, our offensive line.... It's not just about the QB. Obviously it's a huge piece, but he needs to continue to grow and so do the people around him.

RE: Draft - How deep does that top group go and does it match up with what you think you'll need?

It does. Picking top 5 there should be good players there obviously - but I think that throughout the draft... you'll be able to get good players. Similar to last years draft where - with the first four picks you're able to get guys you feel really good about.

There are people that believe you don't take a RB or Safety early. Are you a believer in that philosophy?

I think it depends on your team. Dallas did it last year and it worked out fairly well for them. KC did it six years ago...Depends on team needs and where you are as a franchise.
