Why does size matter so much?

Quote:That's not exactly what he meant. So what did he mean? Quote:Well, wearing gloves is one way to get around the small hands issue, and we all know it's the feet size that count. I never thought of that one. Jon Kitna has small hands (according to John Madden), but he held on pretty well without wearing gloves. Why are some people saying feet size matters? I never heard anyone say, "That would have been a first down if he had bigger feet." Quote:I can tell you for a fact that Manziel will measure at around 5'10" and likely just under or just over 200 lbs. This came from someone in the athletics department at TAMU. That someone at TAMU should have said what Johnny Manziel measures now. The future tense implies he is still a kid. I will never understand why players are not always listed as what they really are. If Manziel is only 5-10, why don't the Aggies put that height on their roster? Quote:I would participate but you guys are doing a good job! There is no reason you can't participate.
Quote:I have been reading a lot of complaints about Johnny Manziel being too short and even some about Teddy Bridgewater's size. This is not new. Every year people say this guy is too short or that guy needs to pack on pounds. But is size really as important as people think? I'm not worried about his size affecting his skill. He is good. I am just worried about him being undersized and taking the hits in the NFL. The guys in the NFL are bigger and faster. It would make me nervous every time he gets whacked by a DE or LB.

Who gets hurt more, Ben Roethlisberger or Russell Wilson?
All joking aside, height or build isnt an indication of future success but if a quarterback is shorter than desirable, the release point is lower and more likely to be batted down at the line as well as (as Arizona showed against Seattle) sending pressure up the middle, the shorter QB will have difficulty seeing the field and throwing a strike without scrambling. For a quarterback's size and build, they ARE more prone to injury due to big hits. For a pocket passer like Bridgewater it isnt that big of a deal but for an undersized running QB like Vick or Manziel, size is a concern.

Who gets hurt more, Ben Roethlisberger or Russell Wilson? You are missing his point. A player with a smaller frame and less muscle mass, ie a smaller guy, may not be as ready to absorb a blow from an NFL player as much as a person with a larger frame and more muscle mass. This isn't always a fact and there are lots of variables that go into the discussion, but when you select a smaller player, you need to be concerned about how well prepared he is to absorb the punishment of an NFL season.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!
Quote:You obviously have no memory of some big guys getting hurt more often than small guys. Who gets hurt more, Ben Roethlisberger or Russell Wilson? Your basing it on one comparison. What about guys like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Rodgers, Flacco, Ryan, Rivers are all over 6'2 and haven't missed any or much time through their careers. Roethlisberger may have gotten hurt a couple games yes but he's also big and tough enough to play through a lot of injuries. Russell Wilson is just in his second season. He hasnt taken a lot of hits yet. He also isnt asked to do much for them to win their games. Lynch and their defense is the heart of that team. Quote:You obviously have no memory of some big guys getting hurt more often than small guys. Who gets hurt more, Ben Roethlisberger or Russell Wilson? Thus is Russell's 2nd season. This was Ben's 10th. They play 2 different styles. Ben scrambles until the last possible second and gets clobbered. Russell runs and slides to avoid contact. Johnny tries to truck linebackers and DBs. That ain't gonna work in the NFL.

Quote:Your basing it on one comparison. What about guys like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Rodgers, Flacco, Ryan, Rivers are all over 6'2 and haven't missed any or much time through their careers. Big Ben has gone through some two-year stretches when he seemed to almost always be hurt. It was one injury after another in a short time frame. Peyton Manning almost always stayed healthy in Indianapolis because he ran a fast-paced, shotgun-heavy offense behind Pro Bowl linemen. In Denver with not-so-good linemen and a slower scheme, he played through a high ankle sprain that forced him to miss Wednesday practices for weeks. So it is not just his size, but also the type of offense he was in and how good his linemen were. The Patriots have also had a very good offensive line throughout Tom Brady's career. You know who has suffered fewer injuries than Peyton, Tom, and Aaron? Drew Brees, who is "only" 6-1 and was drafted in 2001. Quote:Thus is Russell's 2nd season. In other words, it is not the quarterback's size, but his playing style, that increases injury risk. If Manziel runs out of bounds and slides to avoid contact, he will be OK. The problem is TAMU's quarterback coach never taught him how important that is in the NFL. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:Being a woman makes me think 6-1 is tall and wonder why most people say that is short. My dad was only 5-2, so my gender has nothing to do with that opinion.5-2? Jesus. Was he orange too? I kid. I kid.
Quote:5-2? Jesus. Was he orange too? Yep, you read that right. Shopping for shoes was a nightmare because he wore size 6. Mom had to hem all of his clothes. Thank God I am a normal height for my age.
Quote:Big Ben has gone through some two-year stretches when he seemed to almost always be hurt. It was one injury after another in a short time frame. Ben has missed a few games yes but he has also punished his body to win games for his team. He has led his team to two super bowl wins. Your talking about Manning missing Wednesday practices? Big deal, has it effected his play? Yeah Manning missed a season and Brady has missed time but they have also been in the league for over 10 years before that happened. Your throwing Brees out there but do you not remember him getting hurt @ San Diego and being such a risk in free agency when New Orleans signed him? The difference is Brees doesn't make decisions that usually results in a defender punishing him either. Manziel isn't close to being 6'1 by the way. We show less advertisements to registered users. Quote:[BAD WORD REMOVED] just got real! LOL I tried as hard as I could to resist....but it was killin me
With as much as Big Ben has been hurt, imagine a near 6-foot maybe-200lb Manziel playing with the same style. For you investment types, maybe you wanna buy stock in medical supply companies
Quote:Of course not. And we all know it's the feet size that matters.Leftwich was 6'5", but he had size 8 shoes and ran like a girl. That explains a few things. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

While I agree with you above, and you are correct, I wish you would have portrayed the above stance at the time. Its easy to rip players when they are gone and its an easy critique. This is my point about you - you rarely if ever criticize the team at the moment. At the time, you loved Leftwich. Only now do you criticize him.
Shouldn't this thread be in the Sideline forum?
Oohh quarterbacks... Well, carry on then. And yes, yes it matters. In both cases.
Quote:Ben has missed a few games yes but he has also punished his body to win games for his team. He has led his team to two super bowl wins. Of course I remember that injury. It was a severely torn right shoulder. That has something to do with being a quarterback. The ankle injury did not affect Peyton's play because he is strictly a pocket passer and does not run very much. It would have been problematic for Robert Griffin. |
