Why does size matter so much?

#61

Quote:Leftwich was 6'5", but he had size 8 shoes and ran like a girl. That explains a few things.

Yeah, it tells me height and foot size are not related.

I had no idea Leftwich was that tall.

There seems to be a lot of discussion on QBs in here, can we get back on topic please??

What do you mean get back on topic? All of the posts about quarterbacks are on topic, FYI.

Feel free to discuss other positions where people worry about a player's height and weight.

I applaud you JW for trying to keep this thread related to football.

I will stand by you.

Yes of course everyone on here is alluding to QB size with their mysterious analogies.

I mean it doesn't make any sense how could a large QB sail a boat in the middle of the ocean if the motion is all rocking and suchWink

Quote:I can tell you for a fact that Manziel will measure at around 5'10" and likely just under or just over 200lbs. This came from someone in the athletics department at TAMU.

So feel free to bookmark this comment for my gold medal during the combine.

Good point.  She should ask the girls at "Pure Gold".

Because I'm certain Manziel has.  Hey-o.....

Yes ma'am.  So, what positions should we discuss?

Wide receiver. It may seem obvious taller is better, but Carolina's Steve Smith is only 5-9. A lot of very good receivers are shorter than 6-4 Brandon Marshall. What gives?

There's a lot more to being a WR that has little to do with height.

Route running

Catching the ball

Picking up yards after the catch, etc.

Quote:I totally understand why people think big guys have an advantage over small guys who play the same position. Taller is better, no doubt about it. But it seems people are quick to reject a player as too small when other "short" players at the same position are very successful in the NFL and rarely get hurt.

You know why the shotgun formation was created? Because it made visibility easier for the quarterback. That seperation from the linemen makes height less important to a team that uses it a lot.
The shotgun was not created for enhanced visibility, but for protection against a pass rush. Though not the first to use it, the system gained recognition throughout the league with Roger Staubach in Dallas under Tom Landry.  Staubach was 6'3'

When you get into the endzone, act like you've been there before.

Why dont you like QBs with large feet sailing a boat in the middle of the ocean?

I read Bill Walsh invented the shotgun as part of the West Coast Offense, but ironically Joe Montana and Steve Young refused to use it.

I'm so glad I found this thread.

JaguarsWoman, what quarterbacks do you think have good size?

LOL We could talk about running backs, tight ends, offensive linemen, etc. At every position, there are some great players who don't get hurt a lot and are considered undersized.

I think "good size" for a quarterback depends on how he throws the ball (Drew Brees throws it up to prevent bat downs) and his mobility. It is not black and white like many people think.

Those silly myths.

There are a lot of them. Hopefully people will start to realize how overrated a player's height and weight are when what really matters is how he plays.

I never thought it was black and white either.

I do think that size matters to a tight end especially.
