Why does size matter so much?

Quote:Also, is anybody opposed to bringing in two guys to compete? Heck, throw them both into the action and see who can rise to the occasion faster.
I'm more than opposed to it; I cringe whenever I hear the expression.  It's like resigning yourself to accepting mediocrity.  It's Ok for a fourth round pick for a multi-player position such as receiver.  A first rounder should be a starter and the third overall should be THE GUY.

When you get into the endzone, act like you've been there before.

I can't make any predictions about a player I only saw once.

Even if he's big enough?

Position, size, performance.....where to go now, where to go now?  The options are a plenty.

How strong does a player's will have to be before he can perform?  Wait......who's Will?

Quote:Liike foot size, it is not always bigger in tall  men than it is in short men. I guess that is why nobody talks about how big a quarterback's or receiver's hands are.

What in the world does that mean?

Exactly! A quarterback's height and weight are almost irrelevant if five players in front of him suck.

Do you think size has any correlation to how often people in front of him suck? If a quarterback is bigger, those in front of him might feel obligated to put more effort into suck level. No one wants to block for a small quarterback that doesn't take advantage of the situation he is in.

Well stated, Hail. If I had five players in front of me who suck, I wouldn't worry about my height.

I am pretty sure offensive linemen never want to suck no matter who the quarterback is and don't think about the quarterback's size during practices.

Would you worry about your weight?

Has anyone brought up sacks yet?

...do the smaller ones have their balls batted more?

If the number of times you have your balls batted is a direct correlation to size...Chad Henne, well, poor guy...

Quote:I have been reading a lot of complaints about Johnny Manziel being too short and even some about Teddy Bridgewater's size. This is not new. Every year people say this guy is too short or that guy needs to pack on pounds. But is size really as important as people think?

I don't think so. I see big guys suck and get hurt. I see small guys star and stay healthy. I see overweight guys who are more at risk of injuries than small players. I think it matters a little bit, but not nearly as much as people say, and no player should be rejected for being too small if he has all of the skills and intangibles required to play his position.

Don't get me wrong; I totally understand why people want tall receivers and quarterbacks. I just think the height and weight of a player should not be deterrants.

The NFL typically sets size standards by informal consensus. Most standards are arrived at based on decades and decades worth of experience.

I wouldn't want to go into much detail as there are those that seem to hang on every word and phrase imaginable in order to argue about their personal favorite draft prospect.

So, let's just say that there are exceptions to norms, but more favorable measureables are desired.
