I totally understand that one. I don't know what people you know, but I live in Tampa, and there is still little to no gas to be had. So no, that's not exaggerated at all. What was exaggerated was people saying this was a death sentence for Tampa. I wonder who that was.

One took 19, one took 75, and the other took 301. None had a problem. You're damn right I said this could be a death sentence for Tampa, bc it very well could have been. Tampa got extremely lucky it weakened as fast as it did from that wind shear and didn't track slightly further West. I stand by what I said, Irma had the makings of a worst case scenario for Tampa until the last couple hours. You guys got extremely lucky and I'm very glad to be wrong. Oh and another took 41 North and had no gas issues as well.

I was referring to mvannostran. He doesn't have mental issues and seems like a good guy.
I had no damage to my home, just lots of tree limbs in my yard that had to be cleaned up.
However, there are wires down and telephone poles down all over my neighborhood. I think we must have been hit by a tornado, the electrical system in my neighborhood is mangled. So I thought we would be weeks without power. But then last night along comes this JEA guy, and he says, "we'll have your power on at this house by 8:00 tonight." We say, "but what about all the poles that are down and all the wires in the road?" He says, "those are on another circuit." And sure enough, at 8:05, our lights come back on. I don't think I'll have TV or internet for a while, except for internet via cell phone.

Do you know what two elements caused it to stay in over open waters much longer than expected, and why it ultimately went up the peninsula rather than hugging the east or west coasts of the state, or worse, getting into the Gulf? What caused it to weaken as rapidly as it did, even when the storm's organization prior to landfall suggested that it should have held its strength longer than it did? And what combination of those factors combined to keep it from being a devastating event for Tampa?(09-13-2017, 02:59 AM)Jagsfan4life9/28/82 Wrote: I don't know what people you know, but I live in Tampa, and there is still little to no gas to be had. And I'm not a meteorologist, just a hobbyist with a few years of highly informal training. There were no "serious mental issues" in play when warnings went out to Tampa that it could suffer a devastating hit from a category 4 storm. As late as 6-12 hours prior to landfall, that was a very real possibility, and if it had happened, the conversation would be less about Jacksonville flooding and more about the dozens of people who would have died in Tampa as large swaths of the city were rendered uninhabitable. So, since you're of sound mind and a better forecaster than, you know, the paid forecasters, answer the questions above for me. No asking your neighbor's cat. He has a much better grasp of the situation than you ever will, and his help would be cheating.
Does anyone know if the Villages of Pablo of San Pablo Blvd got any flooding? I used to own a house in there when I was stationed at Mayport.

Finally got power back on. Still many in my area without power. Trees and lines down everywhere and we were in borderline cat 1/tropical storm strength here. No structure damage but plenty of limbs to clean up. Garbage service not helping as they said I will miss this week of service, but they will allow extra next week. Feels good to have AC again. I hope that many will find releif where it will take weeks to get the power and other utilities on.
Went to my grocery store and what did they have plenty of ......... water. Could of used that last week. Also had to drive about 50 miles for gas.
We finally got our power back on yesterday afternoon after losing it during the nor easter on Sunday morning. Didn't get to see the game because we weren't able to get everything hooked up to the generator until late Sunday as the storm was approaching. Every battery operated radio in the house was on the game, but there's something to be said about the visual aspect of the game. Play-by-play guys are expected to be artists painting a picture for the listening office. Frank Frangie is still working with a box of broken Crayolas missing half the colors. It was painful.
Anyway, I live in an area where our tree canopy is considered a selling point. I've got two huge water oaks in my yard, one that sits 15 feet from my office window that leans back over the house. It's about 80 feet tall, and the trunk has a 10' circumference. I always worry about this one in storms because they have a tendency to just topple over after being rained on and dealing with high winds for as long as we saw this time around. Fortunately, we've kept the tree trimmed up to keep it from getting too top heavy, so it stood tall. However, it looked like a bomb hit the front yard after the storm from all the limbs that dropped from the tree. After being in the dark for nearly a day, as we were getting hit by the back end of the storm on Monday morning around 9:00, we heard the often described freight train. That shook the house and had us all scrambling, but it ended within a few seconds with a resounding thud on our roof. I ran out in the front yard expecting to see our big tree laying on top of the house, but as I was doing so, my wife let me know that it was in our back yard. The thud came from my neighbor's back yard. Two huge old pine trees were twisted about 10 feet up on their trunks, and both fell over on my roof. Fortunately, the damage was mostly contained to the eave (crushed) and exterior siding in that area that was crushed. No puncture of the roof, although there's clearly structural damage. I feel pretty lucky as a neighbor across the street had an old blackjack oak come down on his house. The guy just spent a ton of money replacing the roof and completely redoing his garage to put in a really nice shop to work on his car and do wood work. The tree came down on the garage and completely destroyed the workbench and equipment area of the garage, but didn't touch either of his cars. The force of the tree ripped the electrical service from the house out, and started a small fire that he was out there at 2:00 in the morning putting out himself. We had several trees out in our area, and it appears a tornado touched down in the back of our neighborhood and did significant damage to a friend of ours home, and the neighbor behind them. They're still without power as of this morning, so we feel pretty lucky. It was a good bonding experience for our neighborhood. Everyone was out there helping clean up on our cul de sac. One of our neighbors left town for the storm because they have a history in these things of something falling and crushing a car, blowing out windows, or puncturing their roof. Wise decision as they had two huge trees come down in their back yard crushing their screened porch. We got a lot of their debris cleared out before they got home yesterday. They covered dinner for everyone last night to say thank you. Nobody got hurt in our area, and everyone will be made whole for whatever damage they sustained. We definitely feel quite lucky. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Finally got my cable and Internet back a few minutes ago. Glad to have it back, but I'm extremely grateful that being without cable is the only hardship I endured from the storm!!

Yes, I know all of that and said exactly that earlier in the thread in my initial response to mvannostran's death sentence comment. That comment directly followed a shift in the storm's track west from being right over Jacksonville to over the center of the peninsula. Interestingly enough, that track was pretty close to what actually happened. I fully understand what the right side of a cat 4 or 5 charging up Tampa Bay would do to this area. But nothing like that was ever in the forecast track. The closest I've ever seen to that happening was Charley. But Tampa was spared when it took a turn east over Punta Gorda. I went out and bought a generator today. I was hard headed and thought the power would come back on in a day or two.. Wrong.. <queue the Price is Right losing horn>
Love the new generator though. It's a 5000 watt Champion Brand. Cost me about $600, but well worth it.. When my central heat and air went out on me last year, I went and got 2 window units for the time being as the outside unit was being replaced. So glad I got those too.. Got both going in my living room right now and it feels like the inside of an ice box.. Ice box.. Sounds like the punchline to a dirty joke about an Eskimo woman..
I always keep a window unit just for cases like this!! Nothing worse than trying to sleep in the heat!!
