Why does size matter so much?

A QB like Brees with a high release point can be similar to a taller QB with a lower release point (Stafford/Rivers) and get away with fewer batted balls but that's a bit short-sighted (no pun intended). The QBs that get passes batted lack mobility within the pocket

AT&T tells me that bigger is better.

Now the question is: how big is too big?

Is there such a thing? Pockets expand.

It depends on the position. Kickers and punters can't be too small because they rarely get tackled. But the elementary school kids in a library were right about receivers.

John Madden brought this up during a Cowboys game. He said one of the offensive linemen (maybe Larry Allen) could not make all of the moves small linemen can. But I have no idea what the weight limit should be for a lineman.

Years ago I read about a Browns player (can't remember who) being very tall for a defensive lineman. But is there really anything wrong with a DL being 6-8?

JW, a tall defensive lineman may lack leverage at the point of attack to a modestly sized offensive lineman. When John Henderson got up there in years this became an issue

Same goes for an offensive lineman. You don't see too many 6'8" guards because the name of the game on the interior line is typically getting underneath the defensive tackles.

Ed "Too Tall" Jones from the Cowboys is who you're thinking of.

6'9", 271 lbs, played 15 years in the NFL.

Season Ticket holder since 2004. Smile

A QB who is smaller may pat his balls a lot more if he isnt wearing protection to get a good grip and release.

A small QB may take more time to develop chemistry with the wide receiver. The QB has to be in point and penetrate his balls with consistency. The receiver may have to go down low, or even bend over backwards to catch some balls. There is never an ideal catch.

We cant forget, protection may or may not be an issue. Some QB's thrive without it, and others must have it for their safety.

Jamies_fried, what about big QB?

Can we get a thread started on ball carriers?

All opposing QBs from that era who had passes batted down would agree he was way too tall.

When you get into the endzone, act like you've been there before.

It's been said after countless scientific studies, that anywhere between 6 to 8 is good enough to get the job done regardless of position, speed, and some other factor that I'm sure someone on here can help me out with because I can't seem to remember.

LOL no, not him. The Cowboys player was not too tall, just way too heavy.

So you are saying the quarterback and receiver should be a similar height - either both short or both tall. Cam Newton and Steve Smith beg to differ.

He 'ain't heavy, he's my brother.

Are you thinking of Aaron "Too Heavy" Gibson?

Stop with the nonsense, pirkster.

No, somebody who played for Dallas in the 1990s and/or 2000s.

Lol, Pirkster wishes he is big like Teddy.
