But what about when they're the Jets?

Um, the Jets are not close to elite in rushing offense, so you are dead wrong about that.

What made me hopeful/ about this season was last year's records for teams on our schedule, which include the Bengals, Browns, Rams, 49ers, Cardinals, Chargers, and Jets. Oh yes, and we got a mostly new coaching staff and EVP. Little did we know none of that matters if your run defense sucks.

Its pretty frustrating. Seems more like a lack of discipline than ability to stop the run

I never thought about that. This is Myles Jack's first year as a full-time starter, so I could chalk it up as inexperience, but it was frustrating to see him whiff on his route.

The last game was pretty tough to watch when they ran it. But a lot of it was due to two big plays that just comes down to fundamentals and paying attention. The first big run is what happens when you don't play through the whistle. And the second big run was mostly on Church. He was out of place and we paid for it.

I think they'll get it corrected. And the next two weeks are the biggest opportunities for the defense to show they're much, much better against the run than people think. Because Pittsburgh and L.A lean heavy on Bell and Gurley respectively. I thought L.A would be an easy game. Now it's looking like a slug fest. This weekend's game is the one I've been wanting to see since it was announced.

Jalen Ramsey should be matching up with Antonio Brown everywhere on the field. And I am curious to see how Jack and Smith react to Bell when he has the football in his hands. The front four is going to have an interesting test here. Ben isn't a young man anymore but he's still tough as hell and you can't just assume he's down if you've got one arm on him as a defender.

I hope it's an ugly game. And I hope we win to the tune of 17 to 16 late in the 4th.

Why?

I am not worried about the Rams. One week at a time. But since you mentioned it, if we can stop Bell we can stop Gurley.

On the 75-yard TD run, I think Smith and/or Campbell assumed Powell was down by contact. That appeared to be the case on both full-speed and slow-motion replays. They need to do a better job making sure Bell is DBC in that situation, which is a mental error.

I'm not worried about the rush defense at all.

I chalk it up the the defense overlooking the Jets and trying to make the big play instead of staying disciplined.

Yeah, but there is some pretty big caveats with that. They were missing Bob Sanders half the season who came back and played like a madman in the playoffs. And of course we ran them over in our game against them. That was one of the best Jags game ever in my book. 375 yards rushing, wearing the best jerseys with our best RB's beating the Colts with Manning in his prime. It doesn't get any better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmQAYpeU0Hk

Yep, their run D was night and day better when Sanders came back.  I have never seen a defense improve so much from a safety when Bob Sanders c ame back that year.  They would of never won the SB without him

What? C'mon, man. We let the Titans run all over us too. The Ravens made some good running plays as well. It is not just overlooking an opponent; we really do suck at run defense when you add it up.

We were ranked 32nd in run defense success rating prior to the Jets game. I chalked it up as too small of a sample size due to the Titans game and the second half running by Houston and Baltimore in blowouts. Apparently that wasn't the case though. The Jaguars actually might just have a poor run defense. Thankfully we have the number 1 defense in pass success rating through 4 weeks.

I did not realize it was that bad before the Jets game. Tennessee has good RBs. We put backups in during the Ravens game because it was a blowout. The Jets game was a wake-up call that in fact our run defense really does suck.

Of course I would rather have the #1 pass defense if we have to be one-sided.

Why? Because I prefer slug fest games where the offenses struggle and the defenses own it throughout most of the game. It's just preference. When I got into football back in 1995 I was just seven years old. And when I played football with all of the other kids and in competitive settings I always preferred two things.

1. Hitting the living hell out of everybody else as a linebacker or defensive end

2. Running over everybody else as a running back or fullback lead blocking

I just have a love for throwback football. I don't care for the air raid offense. Or the run and shoot. Don't get me wrong. It's beautiful to see that type of strategy executed when they're playing old classic games from the 70's and 80's and 90's. But man I would have killed to have seen that 1970's Steel Curtain in person. Or that 85' Bears defense with Walter Payton running everywhere. I have a bigger appreciation for history when it comes to the NFL. QB's like Terry Bradshaw, Roger Staubach, Fran Tarkenton and Kenny Stabler get a lot of my respect for the era they had to play in.

But when it comes to the Jaguars winning, don't you want to make sure we have a safe lead and don't always have to play from behind? Don't you get frustrated when we have a lot of failed third downs and keep bringing out the punt team?

Negative Ghostrider. I just like to see us win. Rain or shine. Ugly or pretty. I'll take the win. But if I can get a game that comes down to the wire like it did last weekend. I'll take.  Big Grin
