Turnover Margin - Biggest Difference between a Gus and Marrone/Coughlin coached team
|
Clearly is turnover margin.....
2014- Jags were -6 ------ 25th best in NFL 2015- Jags were -10 ------ 29th best in NFL 2016- Jags were -16 --------30th best in NFL 2017- Jags are +10 --------- 1st in NFL The combination of defense finally getting takeaways, Bortles reducing mistakes, O line improving, and Fournette controlling the clock has made the Jags into a playoff contender. If Marrone can get to 9-7 he should be a Coach of the Year candidate but Sean McVay will be up there as well. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
I actually like the fact that our coaches and players are pissed off after a loss.
And Bortles is 26/32 in QB ranks: http://www.espn.com/nfl/qbr
It's going to be really hard to win consistently with a bad qb. You have been harping for a couple years that if our defense and run game can improve, Bortles would be great. Seems like you're eating crow now.
Here we go again
That we can actually play 4 quarters of football now. Not too much of an ask I know but we really struggled with under Gus.
I know it's tempting to be greedy as we've been so bad for so long but we look so much better than last year, like an actual football team. We are moving to that area where we only need to improve a few areas and can focus on depth iinstead of trying to find 8 new starters. There's supposed to be 4-5 QBs coming in the draft, maybe Smith, Rivers and Cousins available, we ffinally look genuinely a year away for once.

Matt Ryan has Julio Jones and he has 6 TDs and 6 INTs. You don't see Falcon fans going insane over Ryan. Clearly this fan base is truly inept. We show less advertisements to registered users. Yeah it's not nearly as simple as saying all we did is switch coaches and voila. We also added a RB that has brought pass attempts WAY down. We added another shut down CB and the best SS we have had in years. We added a high dollar pass rusher that helps force throws and put teams in bad downs and distances. We also have the maturation of another ball hawking linebacker.
Gus to Marrone is part of it, but it's been a confluence of a lot of things.
Also points off of turnovers has been huge for us. On the fumble recovery by Colvin, luckily the correct call was determined via replay; but bc the refs initially got it wrong that cheated us out of the chance to return it where in my opinion Colvin would have easily scored. Different game if that happens.
Championship Formula:
1) Draft Trevor Lawrence! 2) Play good physical Defense! 3) Keep 91% of the roster healthy! 4) ??? 5) Blank #2 6) CHAMPIONSHIP!!! I still like the guy, but he looks very uncomfortable as a game manager. As I've said a few times before, Arizona or NO is better suited for him.
We lost this week in the worst way, a facet of the games usually overlooked in importance by the ordinary fan and it is a disgusting way to lose. A blocked punt for a TD is inexcusable. A pro shanking a 16 yard punt is inexcusable. Allowing a 103 yard kickoff return for a TD is also a big no no. To have your special teams unit give up 17 of 27 points scored, and to miss a long(not upset with Myers that's a tough kick) FG just adds to the fact that our ST did not execute very well in the 1st half and was culprit #1 in our loss. Yes, Blake played a meh game, but our receivers are kind of rough. Hurns has seemingly regressed, Lee is average, would be better if his drops were eliminated. We have nothing at TE in the pass game, 0. The offense is literally Fornette, and from time to time a WR will get open. We need to play better on special teams, everyone else played well enough to win Sunday besides that unit. I can imagine Joe D. getting after some guys this week in practice. It can't happen again, I still like our chances in the AFCS.

It's not a Coughlin coached team. This is all on Marrone and Hackett. And we lead in this ranking because Bortles has shown he can't be trusted with the football at all. Fournette is second to only LeVeon Bell in carries this year with only being behind him with four attempts. And he may have cracked that margin or tied him had he not twisted his ankle late in the game.
It's just common sense football at this point. But you also have to consider that this defense has created a ton of turnovers and distanced itself from the rest of the offense and the NFL in general. I completely agree about coaching and the big difference it makes in philosophy and player confidence. The last coaching job was a joke.
However, just to be a bit fair to the defense from last season: 1. Look at all the new players brought in this year and the difference they're making (Campbell, Bouye, Church - none were on the team last year) 2. Cyprien is gone 3. Myles Jack barely even played last year. 4. Fowler was essentially a rookie last year (he looks better this season) 5. Yannick was a rookie (although he was good last year) 6. Ramsey was a rookie (although he was good last year,, but REALLY good this year) I think the addition of key players this year, dropping Cyprien, and the extra year of experience for Ramsey, Fowler, Jack, Yannick have made as much difference in improvement from last season as the coaching change did. Changing the coaches + improving the players is why we see a BIG improvement, IMO |
