Surprised no one posted this yet. UCF RB Storm Johnson declared for the NFL Draft. I've seen it listed that the evaluations committee gave him a 3rd round grade but I can't provide any sources for that assertion.

 

The biggest problems with his game are fumbling issues and a tendency to miss his cuts behind the line of scrimmage turning a possible 3-4 yard gain into a 1-2 yard loss. However, he has soft hands and is very good in open space. He runs a 4.4 and could certainly be a replacement for MJD as a possible three-down back.

 

What do you guys think of him as a fourth or fifth round pick up?

I think grabbing him in the 4th round would be the steal of the draft!

 

I do wish he moved laterally a little better.  If he could cut and hit a hole faster I think he'd be a lock for the first round.  Although McFadden wasnt all that good moving side to side either and he was drafted pretty high.

Scouting well is all that matters.  Draft philosophy is all fluff.

If he can cure his fumble problems then he'd be good value.  He's a north/south guy.  You get him going sideways and he doesn't have the speed to get the corner.  But I can see him doing work in the NFL.

Indeed. Has a great name. He can be electric, but I'm not sure if he can be a featureback 20+ carries a game. Heck, I don't even know what Dave and Gus want. Do they want that featureback or a committee?

If Gus is following the example set by Seattle, having a feature back who can command eight man fronts is a huge part of the offense.

 

If we are running Jedd Fisch's offense, then it becomes more interesting. We haven't really seen his offense run well and it will probably change somewhat with a new QB, but it seems to be based on tempo play and crossing routes with the RB providing a dump off in the flat. To maintain tempo, you can't substitute any players on offense, so having a guy who is solid in pass protection, can run between the tackles and catch out of the backfield is critical. That's the kind of guy we would be looking for and I believe Storm fits that mold.

I'd use the latter fourth or one of the fifths on him.  There are guys at the position I like more, but I wouldn't complain at all if we drafted him.

Who replaces MJD if he leaves in free agency or the team decides they don't want him back?

You ask if we need to draft another RB if Robinson fixes his fumbling issues.  How will you know if he has or not unless you play him in games?  If he has not solved his fumbling issues and we don't have another back, then what do you do?

 

If he has fixed his fumbling issues, is he good enough to start?  Is he durable enough?

I could see some interesting things from a Storm / Denard combo. Using a extra 4th rounder on a change of pace back with good hands seems like a pretty good investment to me.
