Cousins would be intriguing, but I say "no." Jags will need to re-sign several key players in the next few years. They need to keep as many defensive players as possible and signing Cousins would make that very difficult. Of equal importance is the fact he is not a great quarterback. Yes, he is much better than Bortles however there will be several other less expensive options during the off-season. If Cousins had the talent of a top 5 quarterback, that would be a different story. I'm not even sure he'd get into the top 10 and options like Mason Rudolph, Baker Mayfield and Tyrod Taylor could get this team to the Super Bowl for much less money. We can't forget when the Jaguars had to release guys like McCardell, Boselli and others due to being in salary cap hell. This current Jaguars' team can be a solid playoff contender for at least 5 years if it continues to make the right moves. Signing Cousins is just too risky.

The salary cap and trade compensation combination are why I would be surprised if the Jaguars end up with Kirk Cousins in 2018.  I'm expecting the Redskins to use the Franchise Tag on him again, if they don't work out a long term contract.   Because of supply and demand at the QB position,  Cousins'  long term contract could easily exceed the one Matthew Stafford signed with the Lions in late July.

I'm pretty sure if the skins used the franchise tag on cousins again, he would be making something around 35 million for next season and that's insane money. He would be the highest paid QB in the NFL, and it would be by close to 8 million dollars. I don't think they will want to dish that out.

I agree that the Redskins don't want to Franchise Kirk Cousins for the reason you mentioned.  Yet,  if they don't agree to a multi-year contract,  I think they will Franchise him if that means it's the only way to secure his rights.  I'm not sold on Cousins as a Franchise QB.  But from the Redskins perspective,  they would be in a horrible situation if Cousins leaves as an UFA.

   It will severely hurt the Redskins from a Salary Cap standpoint.  But not getting anything for Cousins other than a 2019 3rd Round Compensatory pick is something I don't think they will be willing to do if the remainder of this season for Cousins is along the lines of how the first 11 games went.

3. Even if Caldwell picks the right guy, there's no guarantee that he will play well in 2018.

The best option might be to trade for Alex Smith. I believe he's under contract for two more years at a much more reasonable salary than Cousins will get.

If it’s a reasonable price then I’m all for it. As far as Caldwell’s second stab at a QB, at least Coughlin is around this time to help make the pick. Oh and Wilson was a third round pick. Not saying it’s a guarantee but we can find a solid starter if we do our homework later in the draft. For every high first round starter who makes it, there’s a Tim Couch and David Carr and Blaine Gabbert waiting in line as well.

If we got Cousins next year, we would have salary cap cuts down the road. However, those are gonna happen either way, and with a QB of his talent and our WR's with this defense? We would be legitimate SB contenders. And even if we won only one SB before slipping back, it would be well worth it. I don't trust anyone in the front office to evaluate QB's in the draft, they have proven over and over that their evaluation doesn't lead to success. Its pretty much dumb luck for the most part. If an actual franchise level guy like Cousins, or Brees becomes available you take him.

I'm not sure where the Cousins hate is coming from. He's averaging 256 / game throwing to a bunch of nobodies. He's at 17 TDs and 5 INTs through 10 games while having the 18th ranked rush offense. They've never had a rushing offense higher than 18th since he's been starting. Give him Fournette, and one of them will flourish.

I like Cousins, but pretty sure his receiving corps isn't made up of "nobodies" . When healthy, Reed is a top target, Crowder is an above average receiver, and Doctson is a former first rounder who has had injury trouble.

I overlooked Crowder, and I like him so my bad there.

Doctson isn't impressive. Reed is a decent TE, but he's not healthy, and he's still only a decent TE. 

I also think that some of their production is directly tied to Cousins where, if they had someone like Bortles, they wouldn't be as successful.

This. We got Cousins and we're Superbowl Contenders next year, assuming his produces and honestly he hasn't shown anything the past 2 years that would suggest otherwise. I say you take the plunge if you can get him and worry about the contracts later. In two years Jackson will be pushing 30, Calais will be looking at retirement, so we're probably not too worried about those guys anyway. We just gotta somehow shore up Fowler or Ngakoue, probably won't get both. Then worry about Ramsey and Jack (if he stays healthy) the following year. We're gonna have to pay for a QB eventually if we want a title. Might as well do it when we have the Defense ready to go. That being said, I could see them making a move for Tyrod or Eli for cheaper price tags. Both would put us back squarely in the race, and Eli comes with the benefit of two super bowl rings and numerous playoff appearances. We'll see what happens, I'll be severely disappointed if we stick with Bortles again.
