According to Vito-Jags should be $50+mil under Salary Cap

I'm torn on the subject...  It just seems when teams sign big name guys to be the top guys on their teams, return on the investment is almost always poor.  There are certainly exceptions, but usually, those types of signings seem to work best when there is already a lot of talent surrounding said signing.  And who is our QB?

If we do sign some big names, I'll be just as excited as the next guy, but until we figure out the quarterback situation at the very least, it would almost seem like a waste.

Agree.

Its rare that a top FA lives up to his hype/contract on his new team.

Reggie Hayward was well on his way to living up to his contract too, pre achilles.

You made a substantial mistake.

Because it's from an article in today's Jacksonville newspaper by the Jags beat reporter - and it was the first time I'd seen anyone speculate that it would be more than 50 million.

It'll be OK.  You can still post little blips of meaningless crap if you want.

50 million. 60 million, who cares? Caldwell isn't going to be a big spender. He's going to get a few guys from Seattle they won't be able to keep due to their own cap issues. No it's not news. We got money. We are not making a big splash. This has been known for months.

Signing big names always translates into a winning team.

Signed,

Just some food for thought, I have been apart of this message board for a while now, and every single year there is talk about how the Jags could be a heavy player in FA.

Just sayin.

I'm not a huge fan of paying big money to Byrd, I'm more interested in Hard/Mack/Bennet

Don't you remember the clamoring for Mario Williams? And the teeth grinding when we didn't show any interest? Or the non-courtship of Eric Weddle?

Jarius Byrd is this year's lofty expectations.

New year, same posts.

You can find examples of big pay free agents working out and not working out.  I think the key is whoever we sign and pay, they produce.  Gene Smith brought in free agent, but often over paid for less talent.  Instead of Vincent Jackson, he signed Laurent Robinson.  Those type of moves cost you games.

Agreed , Gene never went after that higher level FA. He just would sign the average level ones and overpay them to make it look like we signed top tier level FA, lol

If Dave can find an interior O-lineman or two that make an impact similar to what Marks has made on the D-line then we're off to a great start.

If he can spend a little more and find a pass rusher that makes even a bit more impact we'll have something to really be happy about.

I think the Jarius Byrd scenario is a major, major longshot and I don't expect to see it happen at all  -  though I wouldn't hate the move.

After signing a G, C, and LEO I'd be happy to see Caldwell find some mid-tier or better competition at RB, TE, WR and FS.

A few names on my "mid-tier-ish wish list" at these positions:  James Starks, LaGarrette Blount (might be above mid tier now), Brandon LaFell, Andrew Quarless, and after looking at the list of safeties I have to admit I have no idea.

I see a few good mid-tier SS's - but I'm not as familiar with the FS's available.   Maybe you guys can pick a couple from this list.

But why should it be a longshot, given the importance of the playmaking FS in Bradley's D, as well as being over 50 MIL under the cap??

"wouldn't hate the move"??....It would be a fine move.

It's OK to overpay for one youngish impact player.  It's not OK if that becomes your only means of acquiring talent.

Would you like to double that bet???

You know, just in case you win.

I only think it's a longshot because of Caldwell's apparent stance on big name free agent signings -  and Byrd has said he want to be the highest paid safety.  Another team is likely to pay more IMO.

For the right price -  yes it would be a fine move.    I'm not going to pretend to know exactly what that right price is since I've watched probably only 6 or 7 complete games that he's played in over the years.

I think he's really good - but I don't know that he's good enough to warrant a salary exceeding 6 mil per year and a big guaranteed number.  He may be - but I'm not comfortable making that call. If Dave signed him to 5.5  mil a year for 4 years with 35% guaranteed - I'd be ecstatic.

6 million per year wouldn't bring Byrd to town. More realistically it would cost 9 million/year 22 million+ guaranteed looking at the contracts signed by Polumalu and Golston (the 2 highest paid safeties currently.)
