It looks to me like Bob McNaIr is an idiot. He is assuming it is OK to have a horrible work ethic if you have a great teammate. I want a guy who will not need any help with that regardless of how good he is. If the Texans will need the best defensive line coach in the NFL if they want to make sure Jadaveon Clowney does not bust out.

The same knock on Clowney was what was said about Julius Peppers. If the 2002 draft could be redone he would've been drafted first overall.

Clowney is going to be fine. His work ethic is there. I understand he didn't give his all this year and looked a little out of shape, but it was a "business move". Remember he thought about sitting out this year. He will now be playing for money. Look for Clowney to be an immediate impact player wherever he may end up

I don't worry about Clowney's motor, but he does have one massive problem that might keep him from reaching peak value. He's not a quarterback.

How far did Peppers drop from his projected spot?

well he was selected #2 overall and Carr was selected 1st and Joey Harrington was #3. Hindsight is 20/20 but it's apparent who should have gone first overall

Exactly. I'm sure if the Texans could redo the 2002 draft Peppers would be their selection.

In fact this years draft has the possibly of shaping up to end up just like that 2002 draft, at least with the first 3 picks with 2 QB's and 1 DE being selected.

It could also play out like 98...with two QBs going #1 and #2 (one considered with low potential but high floor, the other with higher potential), and a can't miss DE going #3.

It was not the same knock.

Peppers took plays off, not entire seasons.

Peppers quit the basketball team his final year at Carolina so he could concentrate on playing football and had a phenomenal season. Clowney hasn't shown anywhere near this kind of commitment to the sport.

Clowney has huge red flags due to this past season. A true competitor wouldn't tank a season, if that is even  what he is actually trying to do. If you don't have the heart for it, all of the talent in the world won't matter. You won't make it in professional sports. Someone with less talent will out work you.

You can't believe anything you read before the draft from front offices. Ideally, Houston has expressed a desire to trade down and garner additional picks, and get a good player (presumably still staying near the top of the draft). If they truly desire a trading partner for the first pick, it is in their interest to not lock in on one player today. On a side note, when you look at the Texan's fan message boards, it seems most there think it will be a QB.

You think Clowney isn't hearing all this negative talk about him? I wouldn't be surprised if he came out this year and just destroyed everyone in his path. There is something to be said about having a "chip on your shoulder." Happened when people questions Peppers, happened when people questioned Moss and his work ethic and it's happened to a lot of guys.

Clowney has amazing talent and now he may have a chip on his shoulder.

I understand that we're in the lying season, my question tho would be if they are trying to convince a team to trade up why would they lie about Clowney? I mean..assuming the Browns want Manziel aren't the Texans simply telling the Browns that all they need to do is trade up to the #2 spot to get Manziel. There is little reason in my mind for the #1 pick to do any lying..its not like someone can leap frog them and if they do lie why would anyone trade? Any team wanting Clowney probably won't trade with a team who's so clearly saying they want him..will they?

I could understand if the Rams were showing major interest in say Manziel..that would force the Browns to trade up over #2 to secure their pick. It just doesn't make sense to me for the #1 pick to lie or put a smokescreen up.

Would you just stop with the whole work ethic thing?  It's getting old.  Clowney played hurt most of the season and was getting double and triple teamed almost every snap and he still made plays.

There were people who even said that he should have sat out this past football season so he didn't get injured and hurt his draft stock.  If he had done that, what would you have said about his work ethic and dedication?  It's just stupid.

Personally, I don't give a crap about his work ethic.  If he shows up, works out, trains, practices, and plays well on sunday I really don't care otherwise.  He's playing for money.  If he doesn't play well, the money goes away.  Pretty simple concept.

If he was slacking this season on purpose, then why would he have a chip on his shoulder? There is no disrespect in people doubting your willingness to do something when you consciously chose not to do it. If it was something that would give him a chip on his shoulder then he wouldn't have done it in the first place, and if this is his normal effort level then that chip won't mean much.

How do you know he was slacking? Did he come out and say it? Maybe he was triple teamed every play or he was afraid of getting hurt and ruining his draft stock.

Point is, no one knows what happened to him this season. Call him a slacker too many times and I have a strong feeling he will come back stronger and faster.
