I just don't think we need to sell our soul for a top 3 QB. I mean... what if the Jets draft Josh Allen or Rosen and they bust? They are gonna be screwed for a long long time.

Doesn’t this increase his cap number the following years (2019 on)? Wouldn’t it be better to keep it lower when the younger guys come up? Unless the rollover outweighs that.

That's a good question.

Obviously there is nobody from 2013.

All of the 2014 guys have either been re-signed (Bortles, Lee, Linder, Telvin) or allowed to walk (Robinson)

The 2015 guys are up after this year.  Maybe we could exercize the 5th year option on Fowler.  Not sure if Yeldon is a huge re-sign priority.  I doubt Cann is.

There are two years left on Ramsey, not counting the 5th year option and probably one left for Jack and Ngakoue.

I would hope the team is planning ahead to re-sign those guys.

I think that's the most likely scenario.  They're giving themselves some carry over in the event they need to dip intonfree agency in a big way next year. It also gives them a little cushion this year should something happen where they need to grab someone similar to what we saw with Dareus last season.

I hope not. Fowler got some sacks last year but other than that I think he needs a lot of work to be an every down player. Maybe that happens this year but I don't think he will be worth the money he would demand.

Telvin lost nothing in the deal. He didn't sacrifice money to get somebody else signed. Maintenance of contract practices is a good thing. The NFL should allow teams to prorate roster bonuses.

The most likely reason for this would be to do some restructuring on guys already here, or even a new deal that moves some guaranteed money forward to this year's cap, that they want to keep moving forward, think Marcellus or Malik on the defensive line.

This is kind of a weird restructure. Telvin didn't take a pay cut in any way and I would assume the team's plans are for him to play his entire contract. It will free up some money this year, but if you roll it over, it will eventually catch up with subsequent signing bonus money. This looks more geared for some sort of move for this year - whether it be some other contract restructuring to push more money onto this year for players that may not see the end of their contracts and have guaranteed money deep into it... Or some unforeseen trade/signing.

I hope we do.  He has shown steady improvement, he is good against the run, and can drop into coverage if we want to get creative.  Instead of just looking at a sack number look at the pressures too.  He creates a lot of pressures when he doesn't get sacks

This would be my best guess as of now. Perhaps they want to go ahead and pay some money right now to a Dareus or Campbell type of contract to clear some potential dead money out of the way in 2019 or 2020.

I think it's probably a long term housekeeping move to push out some of the cap hit.   We'll still have the same total cap hit, just spread out a little.   It reduces the cap hit this year, but adds to the cap hit over the next several seasons, but counteracting that, this year's reduction can be carried forward.  

My guess is it doesn't mean anything much, because it's something they needed to do whether they were going to use the cap space this year or not.

Outside of that - or a journeyman back-up QB - this move really seems like housekeeping to make room for re-signings and extensions.
