NFL Network: Best QB in the AFC South?
|
I didn't realize how much some believe in Blake until reading this thread. Even with clear stats some would argue he's comparable to Luck. That being said, I hope he continues to improve because he's a Jaguar and I do not want the current window wasted.

I think if Blake can put together an entire season looking like he did in the first 3 games in December and against the Steelers and Pats in the playoffs, he'd have an argument to be considered the best QB in the division. Problem is he hasn't been able to do that for more than 3 games or so at a time. Luck may never make it back and was probably a bit overhyped to begin with. Watson looked really good while he was playing (well, except against the Jags) but once teams have some tape and time to game plan those performances can be hard to maintain. I thought Mariota was going to be really good but he's actually gone the other way.
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

Luck can be over hyped (was over hyped coming out of college) and still be a better QB when healthy than Bortles. If the AFCS horses were in a race... I'd say Luck has an edge with Bortles on his tail coming round turn 4... With Mary and Watson right behind... No single AFCS QB has really lit it up in recent years. And 3 seasons ago, Luck had a really good season before dealing with 2 injury riddled seasons. Not sure why Bortles believers are getting up in arms about it. Bortles has yet to play at a level that makes doubters seem like haters. Luck at least put together 2 very good seasons to start his career prior to being hurt. Blake has been up and down. Ms Mary was the talk of the town during her rookie campaign and simmered quite a bit and Watson could be the same scenario..... None of these guys are top 5 world beating QBs... so it's an argument just to argue, imo. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Very True, But there is also a subset of posters (#anyonebutblake) that take offense anytime someone says that BB5 is not total trash and has a good upside, much less praise the good things he has done compared to the bad. It to gets a bit silly but then what would we have to argue about? that ugly draft hat ![]()
I never really said BB5 was better then Lucky Charms but that there was not a great giant gap between the two and that BB5 is closer to luck then some want to admit. Ponder this Hypothetical situation - Imagine BB5 having basically the same stats over the last 3 years yet the Jags went 9-7, 10,-6, 10-6, won the division all 3 years and went 3-3 in the playoffs. Would your opinion of BB5 be any different?

Would your opinion of BB5 be any different? When it comes to this Blake vs Luck thing, it's not about the stats and W/L column you are comparing here. It's about watching two NFL QBs go through their progressions and throw the football. One of them appears to simply be smarter and more accurate doing those things. (appeared to be at one point in time anyway) Of course - that guy may never be able to throw the football that way again for all we know right now, so it's a rather pointless argument. I'm very glad we have a guy that is so durable and is showing marked improvement - and I don't really care that Luck looked better than him X years ago before injury. Arrow is up for the Jags at the QB position. It's a bit more uncertain for the rest of the division and that's a good thing for us.

He looked really, really good in a relatively small sample. It will be interesting to see how his flaws coming out of college will manifest now that there's NFL tape on him. His deep accuracy and decision making was a concern (though I didn't see those things holding him back last season.) I suppose we'll see how much of that success was due to teams being unprepared for what they were going to face. Since they are changing their offense, it could be all new looks again.

Is Luck going to play football again? Is his injury chronic? These are questions any Colt fan must ask themselves. If I was Indy, I'd draft a QB early.
Mariota is as overrated as Bortles is underrated and I don't know how you can't take health into account. Luck hasn't played in almost 2 years. Who cares how good he is if he doesn't play.
Watson Bortles Mariota Luck

Also, career completion percentage: Luck: 59.2 Bortles 59.1 I'd say Bortles is a better runner as well, but that's pretty close overall. We show less advertisements to registered users. Again, I appreciate all the stat comparisons, but answer two simple questions for me if you will. Does Blake Bortles throw the ball as well as a healthy Andrew Luck? Does Blake Bortles make better decisions with the football than Andrew Luck? Yes - It's all completely ridiculous and moot until Luck proves he's even capable of being half the passer he once was, but do people quoting these stats really think Blake is on a level playing field with a 2014 Luck? I submit that in his upcoming fifth year Blake has a chance at getting closer to that than ever before, but he has not shown me the ability I saw from luck in 2014 yet. Maybe he will. I'd love that. It really could happen. But I'm not going to pretend that what Luck did that season wasn't better than we've seen from Bortles. Bortles under Hackett has reduced the number of poor decisions significantly, largely because many of them have been taken out of his hands IMO. Perhaps if he'd had a consistent and capable OC in his early seasons he wouldn't have thrown so many drive ending incompletions and so many loss-sealing INTs. That's worth considering. But he DID do those things. And he did it way too much for me to sit here and compare his stats to Luck's without reminding folks about how painful that was to watch.
I've never been in admiration with turnover prone Luck. Watson, also turnover prone, didnt light my world on fire; and Mariotta has regressed a little. Blake has been under fire from day 1. He needs to be more consistent but if playing as inconsistent as he has, gets him to this point stat-wise, he's my number 1.
We literally handcuffed the passing game and people are talking about passing yards and TDs as comparisons moreso than just paying attention.
