If Texans draft him, I can see O'Brien throwing him opposite of Watt and just have him play RDE.

Not every three man or four man front is the same, but it is noteworthy that certain teams likely won't devalue Clowney based on scheme.

He could do that too. I think some are forgetting how much of a freak Clowney is. He is quicker, faster, and stronger than any DE/OLB at his size. Line him wherever and he will be good.

Clowney can play DE in the Texans/Patriots type 3-4 its not the same as the Steelers and other 3-4's, the 3-4 they run is one big DE and one pass rusher at DE, Antonio Smith was the other DE with Watt, and Smith is a pass rusher not a Big run stuff hold the line type DE, same with Chandler Jones for the Pats. So Clowney wont have to be a OLB in that system, which means the Texans can take him.

Clowney is a 4-3 DE. He's not a 3-4 OLB. The Texans let Mario Williams leave because he was more of a 4-3 DE than a 3-4 OLB, so I don't see how a Clowney pick by them happens. 

 

They could trade the pick, and someone else takes Clowney, but I don't see them selecting Clowney at 1. 

 

I wouldn't say zero chance. I think the owner coming out and saying those things about him was a giant smokescreen to get someone to trade up. However, I do believe the Texans will see the light and draft Clowney if there are no suitors that trade up for the no.1 pick. Scheme wouldn't matter in regards to Clowney.

Clowney has the talent and physical ability to fit in a 3-4 or 4-3.  You don't not draft him simply because you play a certain style of defense.  If he can prove he has the motor needed at the next level he's far and away the best pick of the draft.  It's not even close in my opinion.  Interviews with him will be important.

The red flag being that the team holding the first overall pick in the draft, with plenty of talent but a dire need for a QB doesn't seem too intrigued with "The best QB in the draft".

Clowney has the physical ability to be a first pick of the draft, however he has to many issues if you ask me. Unless your willing to offer him a one year contract each year I don't expect to see huge production from him in non-contract years.

Let's be clear - the Texans would have been more than happy if Mario Williams was still there.  He isn't not because they became a 3-4 defense, but because he became a free agent and they didn't want to pay him that kind of money.  

 

Also, NOT getting a Clowney because you run a different scheme is the worst possible way of drafting.  Clowney is good enough to find a spot on any defense.  

 

Also, having Clowney might push them to change to a 4-3 in the future.  I believe you should accumulate the best possible players, and then find a scheme that maximizes their potential... not the other way around.

Who would anyone trade up with them? Why would anyone trade for the #1 pick if they know the team they're trading with won't take a QB?

 

They'd simply wait for pick #2.
