Poz in the Middle, biggest difference

Agree on everything. I can't remember a game where we adjusted correctly if we got outschemed at the start. We either got it right to start with or never recovered (same goes with the offense although the situation on that side of the ball is very different). And to me he lacks the right creativity and aggressiveness in calling it at crucial times. Not a trash coordinator, he can prepare well within what he knows but the feeling that these defensive players aren't utilized to their full potential is there (even last year, at times). By the way communication issues Marrone was talking about are on all 3 phases. Special teams too, the Wilson 12th man on the field situation being the worst exemple. On offense as well. It all goes back to preparation during the week and Marrone didn't shy away from that. Now let's see if he gets it right. We show less advertisements to registered users. He's pretty inexperienced in that role. I'd wager some of the best teams at adjusting defenses mid game have extremely experienced DCs like Jim Schwartz or Wade Philips. There is a ton of nuance to playcalling , even on defense and the Seattle style is a pretty simplistic defensive shell that teams have been working hard to breakdown ever since the Seahawks rose to power. Not to excuse Wash for being bad at adjusting , he needs to develop and quick, but just providing some context. Also on the Marrone point. Based on everything we know of Marrone he's not gonna dance around issues we have right now. I have no doubt Wash is firmly in his bullseye after that cowboys game , but even if Marrone is focused on getting things right on that end , does Wash have the baseline level of knowledge and ability to right the ship? I guess we will see.
It's an interesting idea. You'd like to think Telvin could help step in the role as the shot caller in Poz's absence, being the most veteran presence at the position. I understand it's technically Jack's job as the MLB. Personally all I remember Poz being last year was a huge liability in the coverage game, but I did love him as a player and a Jaguar.

I agree, the thing is that inexperienced or not we have(had?) the window now with this defense and we can't allow to have a DC that doesn't go full throttle with it. The 2nd&9 from the KC goal line with our CB's 10 yards off coverage was an exemple of what we mean. I don't care if it's miscommunication or not, players should know already that you are not playing off in that situation. The Titans game was another microworld of this, he prepared well for Gabbert and once a one-armed Mariota came in he let him move the chains not spying him, ever. Every damn 3rd down Mariota could just wait, run and get the down. While I think Marrone will address most of the issues as you said I have my doubts the defensive approach will change much. He said they may have given the players too many "what if" (said that they have their keys and reads but they may have given them too many info to process based on if the team does this or that then change this and that) that may have slowed them down, they were trying to figure that out. But once a reporter asked him about "you played a lot of zone defensively" he went a bit on the defensive and said they played as much man and zone in a way that makes me think that isn't really considered an issue (and as much as I don't like how soft we line up at times that wasn't the only problem against the Cowboys or Chiefs, players made a lot of individual mistakes regardless of man or zone). Yeah, we'll see. Watson and Texans are a perfect match to see if we have now a clue on how to defend mobile QB's. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
I said before the season started the defense would end up missing poz. he was a huge part of last years defense.

I don't understand how a lot of the fans on the site don't realize what Poz was for the team. He was a good player and also a leader on the field and side lines. Playing with Poz as a teammate, I think the players respected Poz and followed his work ethic and the other good habits that Poz had. The same thing can be said about Mercedes Lewis. He was with the team a long time and wanted to win, so I'm sure his work ethic and dedication was thru the roof. I know seeing olders players dedicated like that would have motivated the younger players watching them. I also feel that we miss Colvin. We were a great defense with who we had, why allow both of those players get away? It was only the first year we were good. At least allow a couple years before we start breaking up a solid defense. I also feel like we should have not let A-Rob go either. The offense was working with him, he was a threat on offense that allowed us to do different things because teams had to plan for A-Rob, now all they have to do is key on our run game. The overall issue here is either Caldwell or Marrone, trying to be like the Patriots with allowing important names to leave thinking we can just plug and play without them realizing that we don't have a Tom Brady on our team and also that Doug Marrone is not Bill Belichick. If it comes down to communication on the field this year, that's what it is. The younger players have to learn to communicate on their own. With Poz and Mercedes even though their on field play was not as good as it once was, they were like coaches on the field. This helped hide some of the weaknesses of our coaching staff. I just feel like it was dumb to let so many players go off a very good team after one year of being good. Why not let them gel? Especially when the players that we let go would have not cost that much to keep. Everyone on the boards should really pay attention to this and stop trying to downplay how much it has affected the team. I understand it's to late now and we have to figure something out but I'm almost positive we would be in a way better position with the same exact team we had last year. It's either on Caldwell or Marrone. Even with not selecting a qb and taking at DT in the first round. We should have taken Lamar Jackson to put some pressure on Blake to play his best football or fear losing his job.
The biggest difference is our front 7 isn't nearly as disruptive as it was last year. We seem to actually be better against the run but we haven't been effecting the QB at all lately. Secondary is just getting exposed.
No pain, no gain.

They have effectively pressured the QB in every game except the last one in Dallas. They haven't gotten many sacks - but there has been good pressure minus the one game. The play from the secondary and LBs in coverage has been much more of an issue than the pass rush. |
