These guys haven't developed any beyond last season. It only looks like they got worse, which falls on the coaches. I understand why many folks jump to this take. And it really does make sense. It does. I don't disagree with it. But there are game situations and downs and distances when zone coverage is preferred if it's executed correctly. There is also the element of trying to influence turnovers - and zone can allow for jumped routes and big hits on receivers that jar a ball loose a little more than man. Simply because of the angles of coverage. So I think I see why Wash has been overly stubborn about it -- but I do hope he's over that now. I'm pretty sure since Wash has been calling the shots we've been a heavily cover 3 zone base defense, including last year.
I'm firmly in the " I'll believe it when I see it" category with this BUT I will say that not every coaching staff even admits to doing things wrong, so that's something.
There are definitely obvious things Wash can change to have instant effect , but overall, is he knowledgeable enough to consistently adapt and to defeat opposing gameplans mid game? Because if he can't then someone else needs to take control of this unit and make the most of it. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

This is already one of the most vanilla defenses in the league.. unreal If I dont see a spy on watson from one of our LBs this week then Im going to lose it... all we gotta do is play man coverage, FS playing middle of the field, 1 linebacker on a spy sitting in the middle to start the play in order to stop any quick slants and then gradually creep toward the LOS... and rush 4.. Leaves 6 in coverage, rush of 4 and a LB on spy duty also taking away quick passes in the midde Had we done that we woulda beat Tenn

I don't know if these stats are what he was thinking of but he may refer to this BCC article (an interesting one, for once) where they show how much more off coverage we are playing this year compared to last year: https://www.bigcatcountry.com/2018/10/17...on-in-2018 Not that we really needed stats to notice that we are giving much more cushion to receiver this season than the last one but seeing it in numbers is pretty discouraging. We'll see if they adjust on these things as well
All your theories assume the players are giving 100%. I think the schemes are less an issue than motivation to play as a unit to execute game plans. Until the offense finds solutions to clock management problems, no matter what Wash dials up, matter how clever or basic, our players are going to struggle with the perception that they shoulder the load. ACCOUNTABILITY, please.
