3 GM's compare this QB class to the 2011 class

#1

Per rotoworld:

Quote:Three GMs compare QB class to 2011's:

According to the National Football Post, three general managers with a "serious interest" in this year's quarterback-draft class compare it to 2011's. Per reporter Jason Cole, one GM added "except there’s no Cam Newton." Aside from Newton, the 2011 class included Blaine Gabbert, Jake Locker and Christian Ponder. In other words, a bunch of flops. All four players went in the first 12 picks. Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater is generally considered the top talent in this year's class, followed in varying order by Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, UCF's Blake Bortles and Fresno State's Derek Carr. With as many as seven QB-needy teams picking in the top 10 this May, reaches like 2011's are a definite possibility.

I call BS on this unless they give names or teams.  These are GMs we're talking about--very public figures.  They don't make statements like this unless they put their name on it.

Maybe GMs whos teams pick later on and hope someone falls to them Wink

They are comparing the class, not the outcome.  If they were basing it on outcome, the guy saying there is no Cam is basically saying no QB will be taken in the 1st round.

The same sentiment has been suggested on these very boards.

I tend to agree, and don't think the best QB of the class will be the first taken.

There was definitely no Johnny Manziel in that class. No Bridgewater either. Bortles and Carr will probably be busts like Locker and Gabbert.

You can add Manziel to the busts category as well

Bridgewater= Cam

They're very different players. Manziel is a toss up to me.

Compared to the other prospects

Cosell said that Manziel played completely unstructured, didn't even understand his own offense

That is scary that he couldn't grasp the spread and now will be expected to grasp a much more complicated pro offense???

And you want him to start????

The one guy (actually two guys) I like besides Bridgewater are Jimmy G and Jeff Matthews

Jimmy G could be Drew Brees 2.0

There's no sure thing.  No one head and shoulders above any of the rest, IMO.  It seems like a real minefield at the "top."  Just like 2011.  And like they said... no Newton.

To a large degree I can see that.

Cosell likes Bridgewater so I like him too.

He is the "Cam Newton" of this draft for me

Jimmy G is another guy who will surprise

Jimmy G and I think he will be a much better NFL QB than Kaepernick

Last year I liked Mike Glennon as a "value" pick.  G would appear to be that guy this year, but he's getting a lot of buzz and could go much sooner.

McCarron and Murray seem like Barkley to me.  You'd rather see them sit and develop.

I'd like Logan Thomas in 5 -7.  He definitely needs to sit and develop, and as someone described him... some tape he looks top 5 pick, other tape looks undraftable.  A jar on the shelf that could be something under the right development.  VT isn't a QB developing school and doesn't run anything close to an NFL offense, so it would be nice to see what he could do with NFL coaches molding him for the NFL game.

Would trade up into the late 1st to get Jimmy G

Logan Thomas needs to sit for 2-3 years, I agree with you on him

McCarron is Barkley lite (played with even more talent and arguably a weaker arm)

Murray may  surprise some people

I really do think Jimmy G is better than everyone in the draft sans Bridgewater

Only one General Manger's opinion counts: Dave Caldwell.

Sometimes strong draft classes turn out to be duds, and weak draft classes turn out to be studs.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Be honest guy, how many in this board would even consider taking Cam Newton first overall back in 2011.  Be honest! :whistling:
