NCAA players looking to unionize and become recognized as paid athletes?

If this happens this will mark a huge change in college football programs as a whole.

It really is amazing that some of these college athletes think they should be payed.

By participating in major college athletics, they receive:

-a free ride (a scholarship that is worth ~$120,000)

-free room and board

-meal plans

-free clothing, shoes, etc. provided by the team

-travel all over the country

They pretty much have it made already.

The college presidents will buy them off by making some concession.  More money, to start with.  Divide and conquer.

They do get all that, but the question is, are they being paid their fair share?   Billions of dollars are being made on these college athletes, especially football players.   It's about dividing up the pie.

The big programs will get even better athletes and the smaller schools will become bottom dwellers.

I think some minimal amount of money, a stipend, is warranted. The scholarship athlete (especially football) has no time to get a part time job like the other students, to pay for the simplest things that many of us just take for granted. In many programs, they are not allowed to take on jobs.

They are work horses for a multi billion industry. It might better if they just drop the school crap as most breeze through with BS classes, and form a paid amateur league.

People always want more

I honestly dont care if they get paid. State Universities already cost the public alot of money and they somehow have the audacity to charge 300$ per text book and thousands$ per semester. I wouldnt mind seeing schools get hammered like they have hammered the public for decades.

All these professors with 6 figure research grants from tax payers money me sick.

Schools would get hammered? Hardly. Tuition would just go up.

So what you are saying is that players getting paid will actually be bad for the rest of the public? Interesting

Good thing I already overpaid for a degree

They should get paid by performance.  Sign up PFF to do the evaluations and pay them by the score and fantasy football statistics.  Then remove all bans and limitations on touchdown celebrations and taunting, and pay them based on how epic it was.  For instance, could you imagine a player scoring a touchdown and then all of a sudden there is a grill in the endzone and he bar-b-ques a full bratwurst and blurts out a random one liner, right there in the endzone! Then there could be a guy in a tuxedo and bow tie right there to hand him his check.  Then after getting his check, he runs to the crowd and does a lambaugh leap and everyone stuffs dollar bills in his tights and pads.

Pay the kids. They already get paid under the table. It's no secret. They can sell cups with the players image on them, jerseys with their number ( although no name is it, we still know it's that certain players jersey) and other odds and ends. NCAA is a BILLION dollar industry. They use the , "it's about education," excuse when they allow athletes to coast through classes. It's okay the rich not wanting to give up part of their paycheck. They say in college you don't play a sport, it's now your job. Imagine doing a job, even one you love, for no pay and your bosses brings home a killing.

I just think about how much money manziel brought to Texas a&m and that alone makes me think they should at least get I say 1000 a month to play! Nothing more than that. I have a couple d 1 players and they are struggling every month to pay bills because they have zero time for a part time job.

With all of the things listed there, how is that not good enough?  For a kid, getting a package that's worth probably around $150,000 over a two year period, how is that not a lot of money?  I'm sure a lot of us here have worked in just as large of industries for much less when we are trying to pay our dues and work up the ladder.

If you pay the football players, I am guessing the schools will start cutting other non revenue producing sports.  Its sad and a stupid selfish decision by the players.

They should have a choice between the $150,000 and going to class.

College kids already get stipends.  I went to Vandy so I follow them pretty closely.  Colleges these days give out ID cards to all students.  These ID cards are used not only as identification but are used as a card swipe to enter certain buildings as well as basically a debit card.  Normal students have to put their own money(or their parents money) on these cards.  Not the football players, at least not at Vandy.  Every week they start with 500 bucks.  At the end of the week, whatever is left, that number refreshes to 500 bucks.  Where can you use that student card?  Obviously anywhere on campus.  Vandy's campus has a number of foodmarts that sell basic necessities.  Milk, cereal, ramen noodles, etc..  Campus also has a chick-fil-a among other fast food spots.  You can use it at the bookstore of course.  So like any college bookstore you can buy clothes, computer games, music, etc.... But you can also use those ID cards at local spots near campus.  Certain restaurants.  Certain clothing stores.  Movie theatres.  Gas stations.  etc, etc, etc...  And of course that doesnt even consider the fact that they get their main meals for free at the athletic cafeteria!  So the idea that these poor kids are starving and dont have money and blah blah seems so laughable to me.

This argument always turns into some Karl Marx wannabe bashing rich people.  The funny thing is, the majority of college athletic departments out there lose money. Everybody sees Oregon's new football facility and they hear about how much Saban makes and dont realize that the overwhelming majority of athletic departments arent profitable.

I guess that would work.  Likely a ton of them would be broke though, and have nowhere to stay because I highly doubt an 18 year old that is clamored for his football skills is going to typically budget that money well.  Probably more arrests too throwing that kind of a money at a kid leaving the school with less talent.

If anything they should pay more for the free training they're getting.

Without it, nearly all of them would never get paid their millions in the pros.

All the while, being prepared by the best coaching and facilities there is to offer at no cost to them.

With the time they put in and no time for an outside job, one could suggest they have some walking around cash, but really... so much is taken care of for them already.
