Big John's Crumpy's Wings & Things

Quote:I dont know if Manhattan has it but Wing Wagon is excellent in Brooklyn.Blue Smoke is indeed pretty good. Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem (where I get the wings) is even better. Whenever I'm home in Jax I love to hit that original Lou Bono's on Bch Blvd though. Mmmmm. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Best place in Jax to me is Mr. Chubby's on Chaffe/Crystal Springs...it used to be Pit Boys or something like that.
I also like the Kookaburra Wings at Outback. ![]()
I'll call the Wing Depot selection and raise you a Wipeout's Grill. Located in the first strip mall just over the Atlantic Blvd inter-coastal bridge on your right hand side in Neptune Beach; if you get to Night Movers you went too far. Full bar and great menu. Avoid Friday nights unless you like fighting for seat during trivia.

Kickbacks has some pretty underrated wings. Don't think they're open anywhere any longer but Box Seats in Fleming Island and in west JAX had great Cajun ranch wings. Never had Big John's but will give them a shot if I'm on that side of town.

I was sad when they closed up. They were in a terrible spot. Their wings were very good. I was a fan of their hot, and always had them grilled. I had never had the grilled before until there. I always thought I was eating a little healthier. Nope, they fried them first, then finished on the grill for that smoky flavor.

Yeah, Box seats always had some really good food. My dad played for a softball team that was sponsored by them, so I basically grew up at the place. I remember when I was younger, around 11 or 12, me and a buddy went up to the bar and started playing one of those adult bar games on the touchscreen thing, and we got into a bit of trouble with the manager dude. It was pretty funny.
Hurricanes Wing's in San Marco have some pretty good wings, great beer prices and a nice environment. If you wanna try some hot wings, get their ridiculously hot sauce, its pretty damn hot. At first you don't really feel it, then after about a minute it really kicks in. I think that I'm a little biased to Hooters, 'cause my parents used to take me there like every week when I was younger. Back in the 90's they would give kids a T-shirt every time they got something from the kids menu, not sure if they do it anymore, but needless to say, I had like an entire drawer filled with those life begins at hooters shirts.

Many years ago there was an iconic barbecue restaurant on King Street in Riverside called Buddy Ezell's. Great barbecue in its day, but toward the end of its run the quality of the food dropped off, mostly due to ownership changes. As long as Ezell's was open, there was a waitress named Liz that worked every night, Monday through Saturday (they closed on Sunday, even after nearly every restaurant stopped that practice), they were open. Bright orange hair, back bowed noticeably as she aged, we grew to love her candor and wry sense of humor. As the food quality waned she would advise regulars on which menu offering was good, and what to avoid.
One night she leaned in close and told our table "I know y'all like spicy food, be sure to try this new cook's hot wings." Boy, was she spot on. Marinated in a vinegar heavy brine, deep fried whole and naked and then covered with the hottest sauce I've ever had, I've never had a better wing before then, or since Ezell's closed. They were plenty hot but full of flavor, not just hot for hot's sake, if you know what I mean.

Gator's Dockside has a honey chipotle sauce that is pretty amazing on their grilled wings.

They had this one kind called Louisiana Lickers (https://www.costore.com/quakersteak/prod...id=3106049). They were awesome. There is one in the Cleveland Airport. I am guessing you are from around that area?

I used to love that place (and ditto those who liked Box Seats before it closed), but IMO it's gone downhill the last couple years. I'm tellin' ya, give Hooters another chance if you haven't been lately. Their new hot sauce (can't recall the name, but hotter than 3 mile yet sweet, too) is worth it. I'm a naked only guy, can't do breaded.

Only times I ever went to Hooters was when other people wanted to go,,, The odd thing was the best time I ever had there had was when a few of the girls on my womens' softball team wanted to go with their young kids. The ladies treated their kids like they were golden. The wings were still very mediocre, but the kids at least had fun...

Food is still great... My 17 year old thinks it's awesome to go to Hooters. Maybe I'll take him and try it again...only to be disappointed in the "food" lol ![]() Quote:Thing that has killed Gator's for me is the service. Food is still great... As my 7 year old observed about a cutoff midriff... "daddy, her shirt is too small." Yes, son. Yes it is.

Quote:As my 7 year old observed about a cutoff midriff... "daddy, her shirt is too small."I think Hooters really depends on the location. I'm generally disappointed in the wings unless I go to the one at the end of Baymeadows. Hooters' wings tend to be smaller, but the location at Baymeadows always seems to get my order right. I like 'em naked, Three Mile, then finished on the grill. ![]() |
