LF had two good runs, one good catch and run, the rest was meh from him.

It was your typical LF night. If he gets the ball with plenty of space to build momentum he is scary. If the contact comes before he gets 5 yards or so to build up steam then he goes down shockingly easily. And as usual, just forget about him making someone miss.

I was thinking the same thing about LF, he just puts his head down when contact is coming and tries to bully his way through. He just does not seem to have a pocket full of moves to make players miss.

Well If I was Yannick I would take the 19 million because I don't think they will pay him more If Allen plays near the level he played last night.  I have to watch the tape but I don't remember Yan standing out last night.
I do think we should keep him he is a very good player but 19 would be my ceiling.

Man what a pick this guy was. I'm trying to hold back the elation but it's not easy. I know the Phins prb suck this year, but what we just wintnessd last night was a rookie DOMINATING that game. Fitz-tragic had nowhere to go, Allen owned that first team Phins O line for almost an entire half.

Then... Oh then... As if looking like an all pro end wasn't enough he stands up and makes a crushing hit in the open field from coverage, for a loss.

Again, I'm trying to hold back here - but try to think of a better rookie start you've ever seen. I honestly think we just added another All Pro to our already All pro D-line and it looks like he can play some linebacker as well.

I think the team had the right idea. If I recall correctly they offered Yan a 3 year extension. By doing so, you give Yan a deserving raise and it allows you to have both Yan and Allen on the team for a 4 year span. By the time Yannick’s contract is due, it’s time to pay Allen, and you can let Yannick walk. 

I’m hoping Yannick comes to his senses really soon as he’ll get a raise and a second chance at FA while still in his prime years.

My God imagine that duo if we lock up Yan. That is unbelievable. Has to be the best pass rush in the NFL when you throw in our DTs. 

I am giddy for this season to start.  

Also I saw somebody talking about LF is good once he gets going buy bad if he gets hit before 5 yards. You wut??? 

LF is one of the best backs I've ever seen at turning a 1 yard run into 5 yards. He's like Bettis in that aspect. I'll stand by what I've always said - that a fully healthy LF is a top 5 back in the NFL. He's a game dominator that destroys defenses and wears them out when he's 100 percent and on. Unfortunately he's only played about half his NFL games so far at that 100 percent. 

If he stays healthy, we will be very good this year IMO.

I like him fine and I'm glad we have him.  But top 5?  No.  The UDFA rookie Brossette for the Patriots had a better-looking game last night.  I long for a back that can guaranteed get 3.5 yards every time he runs it.  If we had a Derrick Henry, Zeke Elliott, Le'veon Bell, etc., I'd say Super Bowl here we come. That said, at least LF is a high caliber starting back.  I'm not impressed with our other running backs at all.  Caldwell needs to go to school on Belichick and learn how to scout RBs.

A good average YPC is important. But if it doesn't accompany actual production, it doesn't mean much. 
Henry has had one season north of 750 yards.

So has Fournette.  

This story hasn't really been told yet. Let's see what Fournette does behind a healthy line, a new blocking scheme and a play-caller that likely won't telegraph the run so much.

Considering the salaries that are set or likely to come off our cap next year, we'll have the money to sign Yannick.

As effective as we may think Allen will be, he will only be more effective with a guy like Yannick opposite him commanding attention. 

Consider the alternative.

We let Yannick walk.  Dareus is likely gone due to salary cap.  Campbell may be too, or at the very least he's 34 next year.  Forget whispers, Taven Bryan is openly being discussed as a bust.  Smoot hasn't done anything of note.

We will have gone from our front seven being an unquestioned strength to a huge question mark within one off season by allowing a productive, in his prime pass rushing DE to walk.  To answer those issues, we will have to expend considerable draft capital along the D-Line, with no guarantee we can approximate the level of play we are getting from the guys we have now, either immediately or 2-3 years down the road.

The problem is, we have considerable issues on the offensive line and receivers, which will also require considerable draft capital to fill.

Now is it possible Caldwell pulls off an amazing draft and perfectly addresses those positions in the draft without any misses?  Sure, theoretically.

But more likely, there will be some hits and misses.

Yes, free agency is available to fill the holes.

However:

1.  some positions don't become available on the open market-at least that will equal or surpass what we already have there.  Typically, teams are not willing to part with in their prime productive pass rushers.  Worst case scenario if they can't re-sign , they typically trade them away for a hefty price, and the teams that trade for them still have to meet their contract demands anyway.  The Bears paid a premium to acquire Khalil Mack from the Raiders.  The Raiders traded him away and their defense plummeted.  They wound up spending the 4th overall pick on (thank you Oakland).  While the reports from Oakland indicate they are quite pleased with him so far, that was a huge gamble on their part that may not pay off.  Even if Ferrell is a good player, he likely will not be Khalil Mack.  The 49ers needed an edge rusher, and traded a 2nd round pick for former Chiefs' OLB Dee Ford.  The Chiefs replaced him with Frank Clark, and spent a first round pick to do so.  Reports are, there are currently ten (10) teams trying to trade for Texans' edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney.  To be certain, if the Texans are crazy enough to deal him, their pass rush will suffer this yearm and whichever team acquires him will have to pay a heavy price.


2.  The few free agents that would likely upgrade the positions referenced above will undoubtedly cost a lot of money to sign. That money is more than the difference to bridge the gap between what the team reportedly offered Ngakoue and that for which Ngakoue is believed to be asking.  


3.  This doesn't even factor in the unexpected.

At the end of the day, it makes infinitely more sense to re-sign Ngakoue, giving the Jaguars a pair of formidable edge rushers for the next 3-5 years (assuming we can say that about Allen), and focus on acquiring easier to find upgrades at non premium positions to complete the team than it is to let him walk, have to replace no fewer than three DLs in the next year, including a pass rushing DE

We haven't stopped Derrick Henry since the end of 2017.  That Thursday night game, he had over 230 yards rushing against us.

Until we stop him, he is the last person any Jaguars fan should call trash.

I swear these guys that go compare two RBs ypc and think one is better than the other solely based on that kill me... 

It is important but there are SO many more factors that go into play to determine it than just how good the back is. 

For example, maybe some teams run more with leads to eat clock when the defense knows they're going to run whereas some teams continue a balanced offense to keep D's guessing. Or one team's QB is horrible and faces 1 or 0 safety defenses on most plays (Fournette, actually led the league in Stacked boxes by alot last time I checked). Or some teams telegraph their runs more by coming out in power run formations (cough cough, Jags). Etc etc etc. These are just a few examples. 

All of these things can have a great impact on YPC - which is why you can't just look at that to determine who's a better back.

Henry doesn't really have burst like Fournette he's much more of a plodder. I guess the jury is technically still out based on LFs terrible season last year but to me the eye test says LF all day everyday over Henry. 

LFs biggest problem is injuries. If he can stay healthy we'll get to see who he really is. Unfortunately that hasn't happened for very long periods yet in his NFL career. Fragile Fred Taylor started off with an injury riddled career as well and look how that turned out. We should all hope LF stays 100 percent healthy this season, he is out best back by a mile, and if he does I believe great things will happen (as long as we don't have massive injury orbkwmss all over thr o line again)
