No doubt he was offered more of those roles than he cared for.  I'll be damned if wasn't great at it though.  

 

The scene in true romance with Walken is pretty epic as well - and that character was only slightly looney.  But it's a Tarrantino script - so most of the characters are a bit wacko.

 

That is one of my favorite scenes of all time (and an underrated movie imo). He was also very good in Hoosiers.
