Jadeveon Clowney

Quote:But as good as Clowney "may" be, he will not the reason we win a SB. It will be about the QB. Unless we have a Chicago, Balt (2000) or TB type defense, we won't win a SB with an average QB. The last 11 QBs to play in the SB from the AFC are Brady, Ben, Manning and Flacco.

Trust me, I get how good Clowney is. He is a freak and the best DE prospect to come into the league in the last 10-15 years. But if you tell me that Teddy will be a franchise QB I take him because those are rare to come by. We can play good defense without and elite DE (Seattle is doing it right now) but you can not sustain a good offense without a franchise QB.
You don't know that. This is a league where you don't win regardless unless you can get to the quarterback. The Giants proved that much before all of their DEs' knees exploded

And if you make the mistake of skipping on him and your quarterback ends up being nothing special while Clowney becomes as good as advertised, then what?

I don't understand why you're so intent on trying to prove me wrong. Your "What If" scenario holds as much water as mine does. The difference is that I'm in favor of a freak of nature prospect at DE and you're drafting by importance of position, which is completely fine, but it isn't "wrong".

THERE IS A SKELETON INSIDE OF YOU.

I'm not even saying draft Teddy. I am just saying that the QB position is more vital than the DE position which is obviously clear. So if I knew Teddy was going to be a franchise QB, i take him before any DE ever.

The value of QB is higher than that of DE. He touches the ball every offensive play. If by a miracle, both Teddy &Clowney were there at #3 and Dave has them near equal on the big board, I believe he'd have to go Teddy. If not that close on his big board, then I think he goes Clowney.

I'm taking the far better player, once-in-a-lifetime freak prospect at a position that is used to stop other franchise QBs and then I'm selecting one of my own in the 2nd round.

I guess we'll agree to disagree but don't be surprised if the Texans or Jaguars see it the same way.

I'm sure that has been said many times before and then another player comes along who is actually better.

And sometimes it stood true to this day. We'll never know. But right now, he's objectively a once-in-a-lifetime prospect in the same ilk as Calvin Johnson.

You dont need to be Clowney to excel at that position.

We should just keep relying on a bunch of Jeremy Minceys and Bobby McCrays.

Dee Ford

Van Noy

Aaron Donald could be Gerald McCoy for us

There is potential premier talent besides Clowney

I think this year has actually shown that the DL is more important than a franchise QB.  Unless you have an elite franchise QB, you need to be a solid team.  It's a lot easier to build a solid team then draft a HOF QB.  I'd rather the team be built like the 49ers, Seahawks, Bengals, Cardinals, or Ravens then depending on your QB to be like Manning or Brady.

If the Jaguars could land Clowney and another great rusher, they would have the best defense in the AFCS.  Just like Teddy would improve our WRs and offense... Clowney would improve our DBs, other lineman, and defense overall.

I do like Teddy a lot too, I do hope we land one of them, but I'd just prefer Clowney

I wouldn't call any of those premier talent like Clowney.

That's kind of comparing Calvin Johnson to Blackmon, Antonio Brown, or Demaryius Thomas

None of the guys you listed are Clowneys size except Aaron Donald who has no where near his speed.

I like your way of thinking. The new way to build a franchise has proven successful demonstrated by the 49ers, Seahawks, Bengals, and Ravens.

Build the foundation, stock up on talent, THEN draft your QB.

Some people don't know the kind of prospect Clowney is.  If Calvin Johnson was in this draft he would probably take Teddy.

Talent does not equal production...Donald has 10x the motor Clowney has

Teams don't always draft on production.  Calvin Johnson didn't have the best wr numbers in college since he played in a flexbone offense, but you could see his talent was off the charts.... just like Moss, Kearse, Peppers, etc.

Donald is a 3 tech, not an edge rusher like we need.

Calvin Johnson didn't play in the flexbone in college. He did, however, have Reggie Ball throwing to him, and he still put up pretty good numbers.
