Some of the road improvements around Jax in the last few years or so I can give a thumbs up for is......

 

* The I-95 -I10 interchange and loop. The only drawback I hate is when im driving eastbound on I10 before the interchange, I always manage to get into a near collision with someone ahead of me because they are afraid they are taking the wrong exit (usually its involving I10 to 95 North.

 

* San Marco Blvd going to Baptist. That area always flooded whenever a 1/2 of rain fell. I remember around the Square near BOA (towards Hendricks Ave.) it was horrible. Im glad the construction help alleviate it alot.

 

* The new bridge on 17 over Doctors Inlet * I would always avoid FI at certain times because that bridge was narrow and was a nightmare.

 

* Beach Blvd widening from Kernan to the Intercoastal* That project seemed like it took forever and it was always congested even on a Wednesday at 2pm. 

 

* The Flyover ramp from Arlington Expressway EB to Southside Blvd.*

 

* New 295/ Collins road & Blanding Blvd exits ramps*  I would sit in traffic for about 25 min on 295 trying to exit onto Blanding south. This was very much needed.

I moved to Portland about 3 years ago with a year stint in AZ before that. First time I cam back and drove 10 to 95 and came across the interchange I was confused out of my mind. So that was probably me one of those times.

 

My parents live off blanding near collins and that new 295 exit is fantastic.

The new I-10/I-95 exchange won a top award given by the USDOT for design, as well as another for finishing 6 months ahead of schedule. I'm disappointed to hear it is confusing, as I remember the old exchange and what a nightmare it could become at rush hour.

Sounds like something easily remedied with better signage.

The signage is completely clear. The problem is you have people who are familiar with the old configuration who don't bother paying attention to the signs, and they get confused when they're right up on the ramps.  We see the same thing with the new interchange at the Fuller Warren Bridge where I-10 dumps off into I-95, and then again at the interchange at I-95 and I-295 on the north and south end of the beltway. 

 

Drivers who don't frequent the area enough think they know where they're supposed to be, but in those instances, the configurations have been dramatically changed.  Fortunately, someone thought about this with the 10/95 interchange at the Fuller Warren where they added additional outlets for the old way of getting to 95 north if you get caught up in the south traffic. 

 

I think the completion of the beltway tied in with the Southside Connector and the new ramps on the Arlington Expressway were a stroke of genius.  It cuts travel time significantly for Arlington commuters in getting to and from the area, especially if you're on your way to or returning from the airport.  Before the beltway/Dames Point Bridge, drivers had to navigate through downtown or take the old 20th St. Expressway (MLK Blvd) to get up to 95. 

 

The state DOT has really tried to keep ahead of the growth, and for the arteries heading out to the beach, or heading north or south of town, it's a much easier commute than it was even 10 years ago.  I'm use the beltway to get just about anywhere worth going.  75 mph is much more my speed than the stop and go on roads like Southside Blvd.  The beltway gets bottled up during rush hour, but it's nowhere near as bad as other major cities. 

 

Oh, and another reason for the confusion is Jacksonville has arguably some of the worst drivers in the country.   I've driven in cities who claim otherwise.  There are some truly stupid people on the roadways here.

I see.   I haven't experienced the new I-10 / I-95 thing yet. ( I always take 295 from the airport toward the beaches when I come home and I usually venture to downtown or Riverside via 95 south.)

 

I guess folks will just have to go through a period of familiarization.

It's kinda worse now and they are talking about spending a buttload of money to now widen the bridge and also fix their boo boo!!

Get yourself out of OP and you'll be much happier.  I don't understand how folks get around town having to go in/out of that parking lot to get anywhere and back.

 

The only reason logistically (to mainly satisfy my wife) we chose to live in OP is because it is easy to get to Kingsley in our neighboorhood which dosent have too much congestion.

 

If I had my way, I would love to live out Branan Field, but just like Oakleaf, once you get out there  about another 2 years later, everybody wants to follow suit like roaches.

 

I can't stand that they have exits for 95S on both the left and right either off 10E, but the reason is that the folks coming on from Roosevelt could never get all the way over to make the left exit.

 

And you're right, the 10E to 95N multiple exits are also confusing.  The intent was to have a flyover for those who didn't need the downtown exits, but if you want the downtown exits you have to first take the (left) 95S ramp momentarily to get there.

 

I'm surprised we haven't seen a pileup yet.  It's a mess even for those of us who drive it everyday and do understand it.

One thing I HATE about the Roosevelt NB exit to 10E, is that you are almost forced to cut people off because you only have about .25 of a mile to work (merging over) with before you hit Stockton St. exit ramp.

 

The other thing that confuses me is there is no exit ramp for people traveling 10EB wanting to take Roosevelt SB. Instead, they have to take McDuff which is a longer commute time wise. 

 

I see they have the land available , I would figure they could build a ramp and expand that ramp lane on down from the interstate to Mcduff.

I think it was more so given credit for people driving from 95N going to 10W who needed to take 17 South which didnt cause a jam espically for people also needing to take 17 South who are comming from 95S.

When I moved to Orange Park 44 years ago there was no traffic light where Kingsley Avenue (then) dead ended at Blanding Blvd, just a blinking amber caution light. Compare that to what we find there now. That's just one example of the incredible growth of the entire Jacksonville metropolitan area in less than half a century.

Yes the signage is clear, but the issue is the signage dosent give drivers enough time to prepare how to plan their route for their exit.

 

If someone is driving 10E, the signs need to appear right after the McDuff exit guiding drivers what lanes they need to be in for their route.

 

To piggy back off of pirkster's point, the multiple exits to 95N are very confusing to people espically when the 10E traffic has to contend with merging traffic from 17 and Stockton before the interchange.

 

Overall, its a smoother commute, but you have to factor in out of towners traveling through, and/or people with GPS leading them to the wrong exit.

Another point about the signage @ 95/10 (Granted I only go through there a few times a year) I think it's offset. So you're tooling down 95S and see left exit for 95S 1 mile...cool...Then 1/4 mile later, right exit for 95S 1 mile ahead. 

 

It's worse than Atlanta, including snow.

The last portion completed to make a non-stop loop was the interchange at Butler Blvd. which was complete in 2008.  The eastern section was still called 9A until last year when it was certified as a federal road and the signs were changed.
