It happens. We swung and missed. And will probably move on after this season and eat some of the dead monies.

Also... RunCMC will make a lot of OL issues seem insignificant.
LF is a bruiser. CMC is an all around offensive weapon.... a la Lev Bell was

Sorting through the all 22 from the bengals tilt checking out Norwell.

So far, the first possession he played well in the run and pass games including two notable plays in the run. He sprung Fournette at the second level on a big gain and he also took his guy down on 3rd and 1 at the goal line (when LF unfortunately dove straight into a linebacker.) He blocked just fine on the 4th and 1 attempt as well, but just not quite as authoritatively.

The next possession also featured good play from Norwell. Taylor was called for a hold, Minshew hurried a throw to DeValve and threw behind him as he was under pressure when bengals sent 5 men, and then Cam Robinson gave up a sack and we were forced to punt.

Nest possession - backed up to the goal line (please fair catch the ball Westbrook) and the Jags dial up a run to Norwell's side. You'd like to see Norwell get a bit more push here, but you can see there is a brief window where maybe LF could have gained 4 yards or so between Norweall and Cam had he not hesitated to hit that hole.

Continuing the third possession - more fine play from Norwell, but on 3rd and 6 Richardson allows some pressure and Minshew can't move left away from it as Cam is right there in his was barely staving off his edge rusher who he let get a bit too wide. Sack. Not on Norwell.

Next possession - backed up again - 2nd and 9 after a QB sneak trying to make room -- Koyack is wide of Robinson to get the edge, so Cam and Norwell share by only one defender at the line. This allows Norwell to go block a LB and Fournette takes advantage, makes a guy miss, and scampers for 15 yards.

On the ensuing first down, two receivers go deep, TE and RB go to the flats and the middle of the field is empty for Minshew to run for 20 yds. Norwell blocks well here.

2nd quarter: on first down Norwell and Richardson pull to the left of Cam and get out ahead of Fournette who takes advantage for 20 yds. Great execution by Richardson, Norwell and Cam.

Next play - Minshew has his Z receiver open deep against zone and a checkdown in Armstead but Koyack gets beaten quickly on the left edge and GM has to chuck it incomplete.

next third down, bengals run an inside twist on the left side and Norwell has to switch to pick up his "new guy" - he gets to him in time to keep Minshew clean-ish but Minshew is forced to move left of the pocket. He buys time but no one is open.
This is the third instance in this half of football where I've seen a need for receivers and TEs to do better keeping their routes "alive" longer when Minshew is out of the pocket.

On the whole he has had too many of those "outlier" bad plays than he should at his salary - and I'm sure I'll find some later  - but he has lots of good snaps too.

I think that's what it is. When you pay a guy to be a top three OG in the league and he is just okay or "pretty good" fans gonna fan.

Unfortunately, when you play OL and block well for 60 plays, but on 3 other plays you give up sacks, people are going to focus on the 3 bad plays and not the 60 good ones. Fair or not.

Unfortunately, when you play OL and block well for 60 plays, but on 3 other plays you give up sacks, people are going to focus on the 3 bad plays and not the 60 good ones. Fair or not.

I think a lot of us could even live with giving up a sack or two. It's more the fashion in which he gives them up. Having a bad play here or there is one thing but when your completely dismantled once or twice a game, that's another. 

That being said, maybe the early part of the season will be his worst stretch and by season's end we'll be attributing it to lack of preseason reps.

I say we offer him a restructure or move on.. he hasn’t been nearly as bad as most of you have stated, but he has underperformed imo. You have to remember that even half decent NFL lineman are at an extreme premium.

Not the worst at all. But he was brought in to be a staple at LG and play at the pro bowl level that he demonstrated. So far he's just been a dude, not terrible not really good just so-so. Linemen whiff from time to time it's going to happen and when it leads to a QB sack/fumble it is magnified. Wasn't Sean Considine a FA from Philly? Kirk Morrison, Hugh Douglas, Jerry Porter, Julius Thomas, Luke McCown, Ereck Flowers, Aaron Ross, Dekoda Watson, Clay Harbor, Will Blackmon, Mohamed Massaquoi, Chad Henne, Guy Whimper..., there have been many many many big disappointments for free agents of this franchise.

PICKING UP WHERE I LEFT OFF IN THE SECOND Q:

Norwell does his job on the Westbrook sweep

LF runs right behind Cann/Linder for 5 yds  - might have been a few more if Norwell sealed his guy off a bit better

Quick pass - 68 protects well

Power run set with 3 TEs: Everyone blocks great, especially DeValve and Cann pulling left to seal a lane. If Koyack did a better job on his LB assignment Fournette breaks a BIG run. Still seven yards against 9 in the box. 

On the pass to Chark down the right side (when he tight-ropes the sideline), the protection was fine. Minshew left the clean pocket voluntarily to roll right toward his target.

Skipping ahead- Norwell seals a lane for 27 to get 5

On the wide pass to Conley in the endzone Minshew had all day w/ great protection. He got happy feet and threw a bad pass. A little more poise like we saw early in the season and he probably puts that where 18 has a chance.

2nd down - Norwell gets beat by a DT that shows an inside move but bounces out. bungles were sending 6 on a blitz anyway - Minshew scrambles for 16

Later - On the drive ending 3rd and 2 -  The line holds well and picks up the 5 man blitz. Minshew forces one into good coverage on Conley. His only guy open enough to make a play was Westbrook, but he never looked that way. Had time to do so.  I think the clock in his head is running a little hot.
