Get the QB first... Then fill in the elite defense later in the draft. Only Early Thomas was a first round pick on the Seahawks.

 

An Elite QB will get you to the dacne more often than an elite defense.

 

The Ravens won last year because of Flacco (11 tds and no int's), Boldin (unreal tough catches) and Jacoby Jones. Suggs was very good but Ravens actually played better defense without Lewis.

Also if it's easy to get an Elite Defense, then surely we can do that without drafting a DE in the 1st round.  We can build the defense once we get our Quarterback.  Getting a Quarterback -- that is what's hard.  


You have to be in the right position at the right time.  The Colts were fortunate enough to be there.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke. 

Maybe bc the Vikings and bills had wonderful picks of ponder and Manuel? Maybe the texans lost their qb? You think the Texabs also didn't tank against us? The Texans should have beat the Pats late in the season


It is any given Sunday but those top qbs lost because those defenses they faced. When you have no defense , you don't really see those upsets .


And yes I do think Clowney and another rusher would give us 8 wins. Clowney abd another rusher makes me think we have the best defense in our division and we could easily sweep the division.

Sorry, but NO PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYER IS GOING TO TANK.  It's just a fact.  Any tanking done is done on the GM's part.  

 

The Texans were also not without their QB, because Schaub was benched.  

 

If Chad Henne is our QB next year, we aren't getting 8 wins even if we bring Reggie White back from the dead and sign him.

It doesn't. But we happen to trust that our GM can find the right QB in the first round. That's why QB is our preference.

If Dave Caldwell feels that Bortles or Manziel will be a franchise Quarterback, then yes.  Absolutely.

 

I'm not a fan of Manziel.  I'm not completely sold on Bortles either.  But getting the Quarterback is what's going to have the most impact.  Next year we go out and win 6 games, out of range for the top QB's and... then we're still stuck without a Quarterback.

I'd only demand a firing if Manziel didn't work out and another QB available taken later in the same round DID work out. I think Caldwell gets two chances on a QB unless he misses out on someone really good.

 

Example: Manziel over Bortles, and Bortles goes on to be a Top 12 QB while Manziel busts.

Elite franchise QBs are rare. There probably isn't one in these drafts . That's fine, get your qb this year then. But look at the most successful qbs, besides Luck, were put on good running games and solid defenses. Big Ben , Flacco, Wilson , kaep, Newton. They were all allowed to succeed and become good qbs. I don't think Flacco or Wilson or even Brady would have succeeded as much as they did if they went to the Raiders. Who knows how good Gabbert would be in Wilson's position just handing it to Lynch and going 3 and out is ok because the defense will get it back

I am an Auburn fan and I have been following Cam since Auburn, Panthers had no running game. Cam carried that Panthers offense himself.

The point I'm making is that you don't need to draft Clowney in order to get an elite defense. Seattle did it by only using 1 first round pick on a defense starter. Good FA pickups and great later round drafting by Carrol. But thats just one instance. 1. You can't follow that blueprint for every team because they hit on like every single pick. You can't consistently do that.

 

What you can do is select a QB who might be a franchise QB and that QB will consistently give you the best chance to win.

Yes he has. If stafford didn't have so many turnovers . If he could have led the lions to a fg over the ravens on Monday night. If he didn't throw an int so the giants could tie the game up. That #1 pick has everything around him and will probably never win anything

Yes Thomas is one player but he is their deep safety and makes the field shorter like Ed Reed and makes everyone's life easier. CBs can press and not worry about being burnt. Kam can take care of the underneath without having two deep safety's . The rush doesn't have to get there as quick.


Yes one huge playmaker like Clowney could do that if he lives up to his potential. Bridgewater who I have 2nd could to but I dint have him over Clowney

I get how important an elite qb is. You named them, it's easier to get an elite defense than qb.

But it is nearly impossible to keep an elite defense for long. How come you don't ever hear about the '86/'87 bears, or the '01/'02 Ravens, or the '03/'04 Bucs, or probably this Seattle defense after another couple years. You can pay an elite QB 20 mil and he will keep you in contention for a decade. You can't keep an elite defense for long because it takes a lot of great players to make a great defense, and you can't keep many great players under the salary cap. 

 

If you want a long term, sustainable contending franchise you need an elite QB. That's just how it is.
