Quote:So under that rationale, is Bob Griese not a Hall of Fame QB?I'm honestly not sure what that has to do with my statement. The prevailing thought...and I may have even read the same sentiments in one of your threads...is that you need to run some wide open offense to win championships in this era. I disagree, and have always disagreed, with that notion. If you read more into it, I apologize. ![]()
If one were to review the last two games of this season and the last game of 2012, one might conclude that smash mouth, in your face, hit you harder football is the key to creating opportunities to score and be victorious.
A fine offense gets you to the post season, good defence wins the game. I wonder what the JAGS D will look like next year and down the road. HeadSlap

When they go down hard, they think about it! Just watch Peyton, Andrew, Caep even Mr. Bundchen.

There's a lot of bitterness in this topic over differences in opinions on policy.
You don't need the first pick, but it doesn't hurt. I'm sure you'll bring up Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell to 'prove me wrong'. But that doesn't prove me wrong at all. That's just a bad decision, and they can be made whether at 1 or 32. You can get a quarterback in the later rounds. But the chances of it being successful are lower. I guess we should just go with Matt Scott. I mean he was undrafted. But so was Tony Romo. Guess he's going to be an All-star player. I know people on this board were hoping we'd hake him in the 3rd or 4th last year.
I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Quote:Drafting the number 1 pick qb. or a first round qb. Does not mean anything. Wilson proved you don't have to be drafted in the first round to win the big one. Hype don't win the big game a true qb does. Wilson is an Outlier. Do you understand what an Outlier is?
Quote: Ryan Leafs helps your cause. He was the #2 pick. Manning was the #1 pick that year. That supports needing the #1 pick.
Quote:Wilson is an Outlier. Do you understand what an Outlier is? but but but Brady was drafted in the 6th round. Doesn't that prove that you don't need to draft a QB in the top 5 rounds? Hey wait, the Seattle WRs (Baldwin & Kearse) were undrafted .... why should we even draft players when you can get top talent with undrafted free agents. The only thing Wilson proved last night is that if you have an insane defense and run game you can ask very little of your QB and still win.

Great quarterbacks are qualified by just two things:
1]Their ability to hand the ball off 2]Their ability to throw for a first down once in a while That's it. When you find a quarterback that can do those two things good, you have a quarterback capable of great play. Next you need to have the ability to run the football. If you can't run the football at will, you can't control the clock, you can't keep the opposing team off the field, and you can't get a first down. Running the football is key to winning football games played at the highest level of competition. The final thing you need to do is play solid defense. You don't have to dominate the opponent. Stalling drives short of scoring points works just fine. This simple formula is all you need to win a Super Bowl. Thanks to EA Sports for creating all the confusion.

Manning, like all great QBs needs a good defense to win. He is expected to do everything, Wilson only needs to not screw up and convert 3rd downs.

Hey guys.. New to this forum. Nice to meet you all!
I would really like the team to draft one of the following at 3rd Choice 1A- Clowney: If we went with Clowney it would be a great mold for our defensive minded HC and a cornerstone for building our team. I think there is a higher level QB class available next year and if we don't want to wait I still would be pretty settled on drafting Boyd or Garoppolo in the 2nd day. I know Clowney has a rep; but in all honesty I think until college players start to get paid you are going to see more and more of these players from less priviledge backgrounds not giving it their all as they don't really want to put themselves on the line for their college team. Choice 1B- Bridgewater. Watching his gamefilm i think he's a great QB, keeps his eyes up and downfield when facing the rush and would be great to build around. We already have great wideout chips and can get a second TE through free agency... So why not. The DE class is deep and im sure we can spend our 2/3 picks looking into addressing that situation. Choice 1C- Manziel. I know many people don't like him; but i honestly think he is the TOP QB option of this draft. With the recent influx of [BLEEP] TMZ reporting for sports the kid got a bad rep. When all he really did was go out and do nothing. The team never complained he was a distraction, the coach never said he was a distraction. It's just this [BLEEP] new era reporting that is trying to make stories out of nothing. I'm sure if cellphones and all the social media was available in the 90's that it is now half the great QB's now would have the exact same rep. The kids rich; he already has media exposure.. so it's not like he's going to crack under the added pressure or just run off now that he has money. I honestly think with manziel this team could be in for a .500 year or better. He is my top choice at this pick in all honesty.
So lets trade our 3rd overall pick for a 3rd rounder and a ham sandwich because Russell Wilson just won the super bowl.

I'll be happy with Clowney, Bridgewater or Manziel. So I think I'm gonna be happy any way you slice it on draft day.
The percentage of QBs taken in the first round that become successful is significantly higher than QBs drafted in the third round. Russell Wilson has been a pleasant surprise for the Seahawks, and is one of the 10-15% or so of 3rd round QBs that have historically become successful starters. If you need a QB, I would want better odds than a 3rd round or later selection.
Teams win championships. QB's do not. They are just a piece of the puzzle.
It's not that hard of a concept.
What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.
