More on Kelcy Quarles - AP All-America Second Team Defensive Tackle
http://lombardiave.com/2014/02/04/kelcy-...interview/ Q. You finished among the leaders in sacks among college defensive tackles with 9.5 in 2013. Is your ability to get after the quarterback something unique you bring to the position? KQ: Yes, I feel that it is a very unique gift I have. I have a blend of power and speed that I use to get to the quarterback. Sometimes I just beat the man off the ball and most times I just use my strength to overpower my opponent. Most of all as my coach would always tell me, rushing the passer is all about attitude and want to. If you want to get to the quarterback you just have to want it bad and do whatever it takes to get back there. Q. Anyone familiar with defensive scheme knows that defensive linemen are often the unsung heroes of the defense. Considering this, tell us some of the things you do well on the field to help your team win. KQ: I feel I bring a lot of passion and energy to the field. All my life I have been known to be the loudest person on the field or seen doing something crazy. I feel that it rubs off on all your teammates and gets them on the same level as you. Playing football is all about love and passion and I feel I bring that to the table. Q. Is there a player, past or present, that you try to model your game after or have drawn comparisons to? KQ: I try to model my game after Warren Sapp. He is a big relentless pass rusher that will do anything to anybody. I always watched him on YouTube when he played at Miami, and he was a monster. I feel that I bring the same passion and energy that he brings to the game. ---- I've said all along that Kelcy Quarles reminds me of Warren Sapp. I do not know him personally. The fact that he patterned himself after Warren Sapp is evident in his style of play. With Hageman, we now have to incredibly tough football players. Defensive tackles that crush the pocket all the way back to the quarterback's feet. That little clock in the opposing quarterback's head just lost time. The pistol pocket passer is pummeled by a superior pass rush right up the gut. If you read the article fully, it's clear that Kelcy Quarles wants to make money. He is working might all of his might to make it to the first round. You nay-sayers forget one thing. This mock draft was initiated prior to the NFL Scouting Combine. If I am any good at picking players, you will know after pro scouts see guys like Kelcy Quarles first hand. I have never had less than a low-first to high second round grade on Mr. Quarles. He is simply better than Clowney, who isn't even on the AP All-America list. The self-comparison to Warren Sapp is valid and justified. I hope we are lucky enough to get Kelcy on our team. All the rest of you Jaguars' fans should, too. Some kind of curtain is going up here.

JC could his success be partially due to teams commiting a lineman or 2 plus a back to stopping clowney. THus leaving him 1 on 1 or against a lesser talent.
So if Im reading this trade correct, JC moved back 2 spots in the first with the raiders and didnt really receive anything back.... right?
Quote:JC could his success be partially due to teams commiting a lineman or 2 plus a back to stopping clowney. THus leaving him 1 on 1 or against a lesser talent.I many instances, it's the other way around. South Carolina frequently used Quarles to influence the offensive tackle his way in order to free up Clowney. Clowney did NOT draw double-teams for the majority of the season. Quarles was double-teamed slightly less than 50%(estimated). In many of Clowney's TFLs they were poor renditions of the new-fangled jet option type runs where Clowney was actually left uncovered. To give you some idea of what I see in Kelcy Quarles watch the first play here. What I hope you see is Clowney shove Kelcy to the dirt. Quarles get up and almost beat Clowney to the passer. The draft breakdown site has loads of Clowney video. I watched all of them in order to scout Kelcy Quarles. I sort of got the sense that Quarles is getting buried to make Clowney look bigger than he really is. The fact that Kelcy is second-team All-America and Clowney is not. NFL.com is just reporting the Sapp comparison..... It's not the first time Quarles has been compared to the former Miami Hurricanes star. Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier did the same last fall when asked about the skill set that helped Quarles deliver 9.5 sacks from an interior defensive line position."I've told people he reminds me a little bit of Warren Sapp, because he's got a little bit of a belly, but he can move," Spurrier said. It's kind of nice to think somebody has my back even if they are oblivious to the fact.

Quote:If your expect those DTs to be on the field at the same ride, which one is playing nose tackle and taking on double teams?I expect the coaches to use either any way they want to. Let's not forget we rotate our defensive linemen. With the additional top talents - Hageman and Quarles - our ability to provide sustained 4-man pressure on every down is immense. Both rookies are familiar with rotating in and out, so there's no unhappy players on the defensive line. Everybody plays. Everybody will have a role. It would be cool to see what Gus would have to say if he just got two primo pistol-pocket pummelers? Merry Christmas, Babs! This is all about finding the best football players I can possibly find. Doesn't matter what position they play, or when they're picked. So I took two talented defensive tackles. They're now in the mix and the unit is strong. Stop worrying, please?

He alternated spots in rounds 2 and 3, so while he didn't gain in quantity of picks, he gained positioning in those two rounds.
2 DTs when we have so many more holes to fill? And Dee Ford available? Genius!

Quote:2 DTs when we have so many more holes to fill? And Dee Ford available? Genius!Dee Ford is awesome! I wish him all the luck in the world at his new position...3-4 outside linebacker. If he can learn to play the run and learn to cover receivers, he'll make it. As a 3-4 or 4-3 defensive end, he's gonna wash away. What do we do with pass rushing specialists? We run right at 'em. We throw the football where they were. http://youtu.be/kSxiVqlYFY8 Jameis Winston is the guy we want under center. Sick skills.

I do admit the entertainment value of this thread is severely reduced. But guys lets try not to hate on JC, he did what he thought was best.
That said, I think that we should start a new mock.

2015 NFL Draft - Analyzing Targets www.jungle.jaguars.com/index.php?/topic/7892-2015-nfl-draft-analyzing-targets/
I've thought about running a mock draft where people vote on who the teams should pick (best of 3 with a time limit on voting). Maybe a new topic for each round, not sure if that would be 'spamming' the board with too many topics or not though.
I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Damn.
Aaron Donald was just selected. Jungle Cat is gonna have to go back to the drawing board for his next pick.
Quote:Damn.Don't worry about a thing. I've already checked him out. He's all meat and no potatoes, and like I said I like my biscuits soft with gravy. BTW, no need to expect Hageman to be a lot right away. He's up there. Down here you know he's gonna melt. Didn't draft him for August, I'm bringing him in for December and January. He'll get acclimated, but it may take a while.

Even more on Kelcy Quarles: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/NFL-...guson.html
Quarles can play a variety of positions at the next level. I see him mainly as an inside player in either a 3-4 or a 4-3. While he doesn’t have great nose tackle size, his strength and power more than make up for it. With his long arms and two-gap ability he could also play as a five-technique. I can see him being drafted in the later part of the first round or early in the second. He can start for many clubs as a rookie.
