Staff & Front Office Speculation (merged)

(This post was last modified: 12-21-2019, 01:43 PM by mikesez.)

In my opinion Caldwell has done well.
And there's reason to believe he's getting better at his job as he goes.
I don't think Dave knows how to pair those players up with the coaches that will get the most out of them however.
So I don't think Dave should pick the next coach.
If I were Shad Khan, I would quietly build a little board of retired guys with NFL coaching experience, or NFL playing experience, and have those guys interview some of the key players that we know are going to be in Jacksonville for the next three or four years. Guys like Josh Allen, Minshew, Chark, Jawaan Taylor, Myles Jack, etc. then I would interview three or four head coaching candidates, asking most of the questions, but giving these guys on the board a chance to see the interviews and comment. The board should end up with a pretty strong opinion of which coach has the best chance to get the most out of the good players that I have
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.

Word is Philly is going to let Jim Schwartz go. If/when Marrone is retained, Schwartz will probably be the new DC.

Calling it now.

I don't get where people think Caldwell has done well. He's had ONE winning season since he joined the Jags in 2013.  Team is in a downward spiral and gotten worse since that one winning season, with massive salary cap problems, several overpaid vets like Foles and Norwell that will be hard to cut without a ton of dead money, and he's whiffed on the QB position multiple times.
If this is doing well, then we're doomed to mediocrity and deserve this [BLEEP] show that we've suffered through for the past two decades.
I think the fans deserve better.  A GM that actually hits on top 5 draft picks, late round gems, hiring the right coaches that bring in a winning culture.  Caldwell hasn't proven any of that.
It's like the Lions keeping Matt Miller as GM for 8 years.  Just how long do we have to go through rebuild after rebuild before everyone realizes DC is a bum?

First of all, these would be retired players AND retired coaches.
Second they would just be there for advice. Khan should listen to their advice, but decide for himself.

Interviewing current players on their wish list, as you said. Inmates in charge, as I said.

Interesting name returning to coaching:

At the least - he could be a strong consideration for QB coach with an assistant HC designation. He's got a pretty strong history of working with good QBs.

I would very much consider him as a head coach. He is also someone who could realistically come to the Jags after a year off

Get him to work with the QBs and Rivera to run the defense.

Would be nice. But who is the HC that ties them altogether?

How much does it cost to get rid of Caldwell and Marrone?

I understand the reasoning (to a degree), but it seems to me that anyone actively wanting Marrone and/or Caldwell to come back has some form of Stockholm Syndrome.

Last year Shad announced that Marrone and Caldwell were coming back with a week left in the season. If they are sure to come back I think he would have told us. So I think one/both are gone, or at least still in jeopardy based on how team looks.

Yeah.
I can only speculate - but I tend to think Khan is more ready to make changes than what is suggested in those two or three speculative articles claiming otherwise.

Yeah... I'm willing to go one further and say had the guys won the last two games after those reports surfaced he would have retained them.
But seeing as they are flaming out I'm thinking that changes are coming. Top to bottom.

Hell... Marrone's little "I'm so sorry to everyone" speech sounded like he had already been told the news or at least thinks he's on his way out.

I only do this once or twice a year because everyone hates the "I know a guy" guy but every Xmas when I head back to Jax, we get together with a family friend who is close to the situation.  And was told that unless Shad is intentionally misleading folks in the front office in order to keep things a secret, it's a lock that Marrone and Caldwell are back next year.  So not breaking news but the hopes that the reports are wrong don't appear to be the case.

The only other interesting tidbit I got was that not everyone in the building thinks it is the right move.  Sounds like there are some who have been trying to convince Shad to reconsider.  Obviously can be narrowed down as most folks in the building are tied to Caldwell and Marrone.  If they get fired, a lot of people will most likely be swept out with them.  But needless to say, doesn't sound like it is unanimous.
