Marrone Staying

Week 11 was the Colts game after the bye, Foles "comeback" so yeah, I take that as they lost Minshew (their starter)

So that Minshew benching saved their jobs it appears.

If that's the case regarding Minshew. Is it an open competition during training camp or is it his job moving forward?

Here's why I ask. If the intent is to win. And the aim is to obviously make the play off's. They can't be doing 50 / 50 [BLEEP] during weekly gameplans.

This should also determine their approach during the draft. You're going to want to fit more plays in your offense that take advantage of Minshew's abilities.

If Minshew's your guy, then Minshew is the guy.

All the injuries to our TEs and LBs excuse probably didn't save his job, but if you're dead-set on starting the rookie star QB, but Coughlin was pushing for the other guy, then it probably saved his job. I'd guess there's more to Coughlin's interference than the Minshew and Foles situation. And for all we know, Caldwell could've wanted some big stars from the 2017 and 2018 drafts, and Coughlin stuck him with Fournette and Bryan. We could speculate all day about his interference.

I think we spend a few top picks on OL, but shoring up the rush defense would afford Minshew a few more possessions a game. I think we go OT or OG with the top pick and LB or DT with the second.

Hang on. We signed Foles in the off season for big money and bought in De Filippo, the QB coach he won a SB with. Those 2 things weren't unrelated. The Foles injury changed everything in a play and Minshew had a wonder season.

For them to now make out Minshew was their guy, I dont know, that seems like selective memory to me. So Coughlin wanted Foles, wanted Fournette to be a key part and hiring coaches and signing guys Marrone doesn't want and Marrone just takes it?

The question is what do we do with foles now? If we can trade him and our second round pick the get his salary off the books, do we do it?  That would give us 20+ million in cap for free agents.

My bet is he's on the roster as the most expensive backup in NFL history next year.

I hate to say it, but I think you are correct.

It makes the most sense due to the way his contract is structured.

It's kind of on par with the Osweiler thing when the tinhorns overpaid him and the Broncos ended up having him as a $16 million back-up in 2016.

I'm sure Foles was their guy in September. I don't think he was their guy after Minshew killed his debut.

Foles wasn't playing like the Foles everyone knew. I think they rushed him back and I think he played scared. Maybe Marrone saw that before week 11?

Don't know why you guys are all worked up.. The writing on the wall was pretty obvious.

There wasn't going to be a even half way decent HC/GM candidates who were going to come here and be handcuffed to a bad $88m career back up QB. Wasn't going to happen.

Build around Minshew next year. If it's another losing season, everybody gets fired and you can use the out in Foles contract to finally dump him for little cap hit. We're flat out stuck with him and his awful contract for next season.

It's there. That's fair. I think after Coughlin's release that some of us felt that it would make sense that the rest would follow.

Foles contract makes it a difficult sale. But with the pair of first round selections over the next two years there was hope to gain attraction.

After Dallas, Washington and New York all had their openings come up it was pretty clear they would have a better run at any available candidates.

My primary concern is Caldwell and Marrone having access to a pair of first round picks. I hope they're used wisely.

Sure. They were lucky to land Allen back in April. They were even more lucky to land Minshew. I am hoping that's a sign of them turning the corner for the better.

I'll remain optimistic. Until they get off to a winless start in September.

If there's no changes made at all to the coaching staff (especially Defense, sorry Wash it's past time to go) then I can understand getting upset. Some changes absolutely need to be made.

All we can do is hope they make the right picks this draft and go from there.

A new GM/staff would have to be 100% on board with going with Minshew and Foles, because if they came in and only wanted their guy/traded up in this draft to get their QB, that'll highly likely just open up a whole new book of problems.

The best thing to do is let Minshew get another full season to show if he can be the guy next year. It'll help give everybody a better look at him, as well as the next new FO/coaching staff if it's another lost season. Which will make the decision to go after a new QB in 2021 much easier.

I mean that doesn't really matter in practical terms for any GM. He can be pretty easily dealt with in a year and there will be more than enough cap space this year to play with this offseason anyway. + There is no need to start him with Minshew.

[BLEEP] no! Who are we, Cleveland?

We're 110% [BLEEP] with the Foles situation. We have to stomach this pain for another year unfortunately.

I wonder if the Steelers would be interested in Foles. Two scrubs at QB and Rothliesberger's future uncertain after elbow surgery. Just spit ballin'....
