US ready to return to moon

#21

Quote:huh what kind of resources? is there a natural gas or something on the moon? and how in the world would it be worth transporting back here?

Basalt and aluminum oxide? There's plenty of both on Earth.

I once read that if a spacecraft could collect diamonds from low Earth orbit it still wouldn't be cost effective to do so.

Quote:Helium-3 is a major one and is the reason Harrison Schmitt, the only geologist to ever walk on the moon, encourages our return there to mine it.  He's convinced Helium-3 is why the Chinese have increased their interest in exploring the moon.

Nope.

Helium-3 can be used instead of tritium (hydrogen-3) in fusion, but it takes twice the energy to initiate the reaction, and mankind still hasn't succeeded in efficient controlled fusion using tritium. Also, manufacturing tritium isn't nearly as expensive as bringing back something from the moon even if it were in a single lump, and the He-3 is not concentrated in one spot, it's spread out very thinly over the lunar surface.

my only thought is transporting it back might not be cost effective, but if they're trying to build a fueling station to launch from a lunar station that makes sense. still that's a whole lot of money to spend for something that is so far down the road.

I didn't say they were researching resources to bring back to Earth. They are exploring possible resources to help sustain a permanent base, the most important of which is water. The base could be used for Mars and asteroid exploration missions.

It may sound like a trite cliche, but they have to start somewhere.

no doubt, people probably thought space exploration was a waste way back when as well. Id just like to find a way to lower my damn gas bill before we go putting people on mars!

Putting a man on the moon is easier.

Maybe somewhere along the way towards fueling an actual moon colony, they discover a new fuel source that is viable on Earth. Stranger things have happened.

I'm not smart enough to explain the details but I'm convinced that water is our solution. I've seen and read articles and videos on a guy that used water to power a small car and things like that. it's just about the $$$$$ waters to easily accessed for it to be marketed.

It's less to do with money and more to do with fundamental laws of physics, specifically the conservation of energy.

On a serious note this is one of the videos I'd seen on the hydrogen car, don't know if it's true but interesting at least

I see. Is it also safe to believe that you feel others were involved in the JFK assassination?

Or were you kidding? Lol, hard to tell when it's typed.
