2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia

#21

Quote:I was just trying to make sure we don't turn it into something bad. Yes, I know it is history. I also know the USSR was our enemy after the war was over and still is today as a smaller Russia, so you can put me in the "most people" category.

Had anybody on this board ever heard of Sochi before learning it is the location of the 2014 Winter Olympics? I did not and am wondering why not Moscow.
I knew about Sochi as a Russian sea resort and popular vacation spot for Russian leaders. But than again, I'm much more interested in Russia than the average American.

Except for one small thing that Russian TV did not show.

Fortunately the problem was fixed at the end and all five rings were on display when they lit the torch. Apparently it was human error.

Otherwise, not a bad show. I loved the Russian ballet.

Quote:I miss the now-defunct national anthem of the now-defunct Soviet Union.   It had a lot of character.

You have to give those Russians credit for the way they turned back the Nazis.   Twenty million dead Russians!   Those were some tough esso bees.

Yeah. "Alright! You rookies run at the German line! When the man in front of you gets shot pick up his rifle and keep running! If you turn back you will be shot!"

Tough alright. Get shot in the front or get shot in the back.

Heck of way to win a war.

Not surprising, those crazy Dutchmen do love their ice gliding.

Yeah, kind of my point. The only thing they had better than the Germans was more meat for the grinder. So they just tossed man after man after man after man at them. Kinda like a zombie horde.

I missed the short pairs because it was too early, but turned the TV on just in time for the women. Amy Wagner kept Team USA in the top five with her short skate. Congrats Amy!

That's a bit oversimplified.

Quote:This isn't politics.  It's history.   Most people would agree with me that if you want to judge the Soviet Union, 90% of it would be negative, and justifiably so.  But you have to give those people credit for the way they fought the Nazis.   The biggest battles of WWII were fought on Soviet soil, and most of the casualties were Soviet soldiers and citizens.

Are we going to talk about Nazis fighting Soviets? Or the Olympics itself?

Russia paid a heavy price in WW2, but they emerged out of it as a Superpower. And that really says something about the Slavic peoples in general.

I certainly am not here to talk about a war. All I care about now is the current events in Sochi.

I'm enjoying picking and choosing what I want to watch online. Once again, NBC does a great job of making content available to stream.
