What used to seem like a mundane existence- seeing friends, shopping, going out to eat- now looks more and more like a really great life. My husband works night shift and with his commute he's gone 14 hours out of 24 so we don't socialize much or go out. Church and some family time is about it. Other than the lack of those two, our lives haven't changed at all other than (me) having to wait in a long line to go through the drive thru teller at the bank when business checks are deposited. I miss being able to go to the occasional movie, going to the gym (I walk a 3 mile circuit in my neighborhood for now,) and going out in public mask free. Why the heck are banks/credit unions closed? They can put up plexiglass as a barrier like everyone else is (Food Lion, Lowes, Harris Teeter, etc.) and mark the floor every six feet with tape like everyone else is doing. I have probably $100 of coins in my coin can and it's about to run over. I can't go in the credit union to empty it and get bills and I'm not paying some random machine 10-12% to do it for me. I guess I'll get another can. So I guess that's something. Freedoms you miss are sometimes in the smallest of things. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! I haven’t noticed banks/credit unions closed here. The odd thing I find is ours seem to be drive thru only. All my banks I go to have that full bulletproof glass. But yet, you make all your patrons touch the common denominator of the dreaded “tube”. Yuck! Commercial lane is where I’ll be.
This one's gonna sound weird, but:
I have a bad habit of looking at people's mouths instead of their eyes. I've got a bad right ear due to an unchecked problem as an infant, and I picked up the habit trying to understand what folks are saying. I guess I also admire a nice smile. With everyone wearing a mask, I'm looking them in the eyes first, and it's pure magic seeing who's smiling under the mask. Also, eyes really are beautiful things, and I'm getting a new appreciation for them that I didn't have before now. And, the data is in: the air really is clearer around here. Hope it is in Jax, too.
Went for a walk around the neighborhood this morning, and I only saw two cars on the road. This was 9 AM and it was very peaceful.
My somewhat-elderly neighbor is apparently having an Easter service in her front yard- she is sitting out there with two other people, they're all wearing masks, they're about 10 feet apart, and they're singing church hymns. She has a good voice; she sings in her church choir. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Something you can probably relate to is that some people are more difficult to understand than others. Speech patterns, volume and voice frequency are bedeviling. I simply cannot understand the receptionist at work. She has a mousy little voice that leaves me struggling to pick up words here and there. Another coworker speaks quickly and in, what I consider, a low voice. I hardly ever look that guy in the eye. If in an echo-ey room, like a racquetball court, fagetaboutit.

The drive thru lanes are open but there are long lines all. day. long. I have to drive my husband's car when I go so I can squeeze into right spots my Silverado can't get into. I remember the bulletproof glass and there was always a JSO officer sitting in their car or in the building. Good ole Duval. There is none of that here in small town NC.

I guess people are affected differently as they age. When I got out of the Navy during my exit physical I had to get my hearing checked 3 times because my hearing actually improved. Over the years since then I can still hear well, but my eyesight has gone to [BLEEP]. Regarding this thread, I was able to get maintenance done on 2 tractors then spend today just "vegging out" with my wife as we watch different movies/documentaries. The wife and I made a trip to Home Depot today. Grocery stores (including Walmart and Target!), along with many other businesses, are closed. Even Home Depot was slow and that's odd considering how slammed the home improvement stores have been since this all began. Traffic was light and we saw a lot of people out walking, biking, whatever. It reminded me of what Sundays used to look like years ago when it was considered a day of rest and family time. It's a shame that a pandemic is required to duplicate it. Now if we could only carry this behavior over to Thanksgiving and Christmas day. Alas, given the loss of revenue for most businesses, this year Black Friday will become Black Thursday.
After a few weeks, I think I’m starting to adjust to everything. I’m now enjoying that the wife is home 24/7. Well, for the most part. Only thing that seems to suck at this point is driving separate with the employees and holding my breath anytime I walk into any establishment while others don’t adhere to the 6 foot rule. Not sure that helps any, but makes me feel better. I do miss having a meal at a restaurant here and there.

Covid droplets, emitted by coughing and sneezing, are heavy and only carry a few feet. Bioaerosols, emitted by exhalation, are much smaller and can hang in the air and carry further, but it is unclear if they carry enough of the virus to infect. In fact, that's something that is unknown about any virus. If people wear masks, the 6 foot rule is anything but pointless.

Drinking the same, vaping more. The local convenience plazas, liquor stores and restaurants owned by Indian and Mexican immigrants were ahead of everyone else in preparing for this. They were weeks ahead of others with plastic sheets and plexiglass shields at their check out counters, curb service filling phone orders and, thanks to a declaration by Gov. Lee, you can get a margarita with your Mexican take-out. Bless their hearts, they're making them strong, too.

I’m by no means a Mexican Food aficionado. We have or had(it may have changed management or names ie shut down due to violations) a La Nap. But we have one being built now nearby. Great timing! Speaking of getting shut down. There’s that all you can eat sushi buffet at the avenues in the corner of the shopping center by Target and Academy Sports. I don’t care how many times they shut down and what for. But that joint keep going out and coming back and I LOVE IT! |
