2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia

You would think that the skin tight, aerodynamic outfits worn by alpine skiiers would benefit the snowboarders, too, but they all dress like these punk kids I'm always chasing off my lawn.

Because I slept through the short dance routines this morning, I waited for NBC to switch from slopestyle snowboarding semifinals to figure skating. Good news: it was the short dance, so I got to see a little bit of that event. How the Canadians scored higher than the Russians is beyond me because Russia's skaters were better. But combined with the other routines skated so far Russia is #1 overall. Nice job by the American pair, Meryl Davis and Charlie White.

Now I feel like an idiot for missing the pairs free skate. When NBC Sports switched to skiing, the anchor man said the pairs free skate is "tonight" when he really meant "in 20 minutes." So I thought I will have to wait for the prime time coverage and missed the whole event.  Wallbash

I also wish the Cox TV Guide showed me exactly which events are on, not just "XII Olympic Winter Games" or something like that, to make recording the other free routines much easier.

Range of motion and comfort is more important for slopestyle and halfpipe. If you watch the snowboard slalom they're wearing the same skin tight suits.

Only because they don't give out flags for world domination.  So, yeah...

The LA Times gets it right....

http://www.latimes.com/opinion/opinion-l...2316.story

We expect cities hosting the Olympic Games to take extreme measures to be presentable and safe for the world to descend on, but Sochi’s mass killing of stray dogs is appalling.

Sochi’s plan to kill 2,000 dogs was announced last summer, prompting an international outcry. City officials backed off their plans but then hired a pest control company to kill the dogs starting last fall. Animal welfare advocates say hundreds have been killed.

Yes, some cultures don’t keep dogs as pets and even eat them as food, but far more see them as pets and treat them humanely.

Those are flags raised for medal winners.

As expected, Russia won gold in figure skating. The American team won the bronze medal.

I've loved the coverage today. Great side stories today. They did one about an hour ago where one of the reporters went to Siberia. Interesting.

I loved it when Bob Costas told Cris Collinsworth and Apolo Ohno despite the political issues affecting our relationship with Russia, you can't mistake the fact that there is a lot of culture in that country. Collinsworth talked about how awesome it is to see happy teenagers who were complete strangers coming from all over the United States to be part of a big team. Even the small moments like that can be interesting to watch.
