The commercials suck, obviously. But the game itself is high quality and high drama a lot of times.

On a side note, have you noticed that happens early in games, and not so much late in the games?  Seems like there's a quota for commercials, and they don't want to be under it or over it.  I've seen coverage continue non stop through a TD, PAT and kickoff late in some games.

I think we all enjoy what we grew up with. And dislike of baseball is pure blasphemy!

 

I will watch World Cup soccer, but that's about it. Even then I live in fear that I'll be looking away in that one instant (among an hour and a half of play) when the goal is scored. Thank god for replay. But what happens if you're in the stadium and you blink during that one goal?

 

I do think there are millions of little kids now playing in America - it's easy to play right away due to the initial lack of skills needed; it's inexpensive; and it's easy to learn. They tend to drift away as fans when they get older. More fun to play than watch, I guess.

 

Bring on the World Cup. I just hope no stadiums (stadia) collapse.

I see posts like this about American Football every time the Superbowl runs around on "soccer" forums. Usually pointing out that a game lasts way too long and has way too many ad breaks.

I like them both so I disagree with both.

I dislike the ad breaks as well and understand why European fans would have a hard time adjusting since soccer just keeps going without breaks.

But when you look at the ridiculous talent on the women's national team, you get an idea of how much having great athletic talent on a soccer team impacts the game. I haven't paid much attention to the men's team, but it seems they are also having their success as well. It would be interesting to hear from the soccer diehards how the game would be if all the lebron James' first choice were soccer before b-ball or NFL.

This is true for american men, where several other sports promise better financial success. But when you look at the ridiculous talent on the women's national team, you get an idea of how much having great athletic talent on a soccer team impacts the game. Skill, technique, anticipation, tactical awareness and co-ordination are the prime factors for soccer players, not size, speed or strength. Obviously James, is a very co-ordinated person, a great athlete, plays a team game and is a hard worker, so there are a lot of sports he could have excelled at, but what makes him great on the court (size, strength, explosion) would be at best peripheral skills to a soccer player and the lack of soccer players that anywhere near size suggests being that big would probably be a hindrance.

I watch World Cup, but only with the help of alcohol and lots of pub Mates. I watch NFL, but I'm really getting tired of all of the rule changes intended to make the game more "fair" for everybody. I watch Major League Baseball, (Rays) but the games are on too late. I do, however, enjoy going to our local Suns games, especially with my son.

 

I've watched middle school girl's soccer (niece), and middle school softball, (same niece) and much prefer watching softball. I'd rather watch an afternoon of T-Ball games than sit through an entire soccer game.

 

They made us play soccer in college during a Phys Ed class. It's okay as a game, especially if you have good cardio, but I'd rather play basketball for cardio and I don't even like basketball. Heck, I'd rather run 5 miles than play a game of soccer.

 

It's a "to each his own" kind of thing, I guess.

Not nearly in the same vein as basketball or football. The average height of an NBA player has been between 6'6-6'8 for the last 20 years or so. In the U.S., over 99.5% of adult males under the age of 50 are 6'5 or under.

Sure it can. You're talking genes. It affects everyone. If Theo Walcott was 6' 4'', 240, he wouldn't be playing soccer. His genes dictated another sport.
