<p style="font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:16px;color:rgb(51,51,51);">Jacksonville’s newest professional sports team will be called the Jacksonville Armada FC, beginning play April 2015 in the North American Soccer League.

<p style="font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:16px;color:rgb(51,51,51);">The team’s name, its logo and its colors — navy blue, royal blue, gold and white — were announced Tuesday morning at the Jacksonville Landing. The name is a nod to the city’s naval heritage, and the logo is a shield with a stylized white anchor on blue and gold background.

<p style="font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:16px;color:rgb(51,51,51);">The team will play next year at a location to be announced later. The ownership group has said it plans to eventually build a soccer-specific stadium, capable of being expanded.

 

 

I think they did a good job on the logo.

Not to derail or anything but I really wish they had used those colors for the NFL team. I think Weaver missed a huge opportunity by not tying into the city's industrial-military background. Dreadnoughts would have been an awesome name.

I would say it's possible but not for at least 10-15 years. Orlando and Miami are both on course to get MLS franchises. That doesn't help our case. I think this new Jacksonville franchise seems to be in good hands. They will have to get a soccer stadium built. A stadium that can be expanded to the 18-20k range. The city has to support the team. They have to get a lot of local corporate support as well. It's a long road.

If I remember right, the League passed down the color choices to the teams. Basically, we had to have teal as a color but it was up to the team to choose which color was dominant. Now, I'm sure that the League could have been persuaded, but that's my little fantasy and all.

We had soccer here a long time ago.

 



It was an interesting fad, but it went away pretty quick.

Different time now I think. The chance of success is far greater. There are a lot of soccer folks in and around Jax now. The USMNT against Scotland, and women's national team shows that (among other things).

Alot has changed in thirty years. The MLS has been around for over a decade and is expanding. The NASL has a solid footprint in a lot of major markets. Cities are building soccer stadiums instead of sticking teams in retrofitted baseball and football venues. It's alot different than it was in the late 70's/early 80's.

Yep. Just like the Chargers are a little bit Rams-ish, not only in color, but helmet design as well. And while I agree that it would run the risk of color confusion, shading can always help you out there. I guess this all just stems from the fact that I never understood why they thought Jaguars was a good name. Really makes no sense to me as far as the connection to the city.
