Blake Bortles Qb Ucf

Quote:I've had such a schizophrenic opinion on Bortles over the last few months. Some days I like him, some days I think he needs a lot of work.

It might be a little bit of both, but today I like him. Just watched his Penn St. game and, for the most part, he played really well. I also liked his poise in a hostile Louisville environment during that game winning drive, sub-two minutes in that contest.

He has enough arm strength to make all of the throws, ideal size (6'4, 230), and good mobility. Plus, he doesn't shrink as the pocket collapses a la Gabbert. This guy actually stands tall and goes through progressions even when he knows he's about to get laid out.

So today I like him. Tomorrow is another day.
where did you find the entire penn state game, I tried to find it on youtube but all that came up was the highlights.

I said in another thread that I think he is a bigger version of Andy Dalton... in terms of a prospect.  He does everything well or good enough but nothing about him stands out as elite.  The only difference is Bortles is a couple inches taller and 20 pounds bigger.  His sheer physical size is probably the only thing about him that is ideal.  Everything else is good but not great.

If you go to draft breakdown you can watch all of his passes. It's not the game in its entirety but it shows all throws good and bad.

As others have said, his fearlessness in the pocket with bodies all around him is very reminiscent of Luck/Big Ben. That is a very good trait to have. Dalton lacks it sorely. He wilts under pressure badly, but fortunately he has a good oline and fantastic surrounding skill position players, so he doesn't face the pressure as much and gets bailed out by his teammates a lot more than most QBs.

Bradley said that he meets a lot of the essentials that they're looking for at QB.

Bortles is a kid with all the tools that could be very good, but he'll need some time to reach the level. I could see the Texans grabbing him over the Texas state product of Manziel.

So the local Orlando paper takes a quote by Gus about their local player and makes it into a headline.   Leaving out the fact that Gus said basically the same thing about every player he was asked about.   He's impressed with a lot of guys!   And he aint gonna tell you which one impresses him the most!

Gus Bradley could be impressed with everyone for different reasons. Maybe he is just impressed with the way a guy talked during his interview or his knowledge of the game etc. Nobody knows exactly what impresses him about each quarterback. But this one holds some water because Blake Bortles is often named as a possible top five pick.

I really like Bortles and I think he is going to have a good career.  I wouldn't be upset if he was the Jags' pick.

Three might be a little early but if he pans out the way I think he will, it won't seem so bad in retrospect.

Except for accuracy and anticipation, 2 of the 3 most important attributes according to Bradley, sure, Bortles fits what they're looking for.

Gus Bradley used the word "intrigued" several times in his press conference.

I wish the video had captions for the questions he was asked because without them, I have no way to know which players he is talking about.

Give Bortles time to learn from the bench and he's going to be good. Start him as a rookie and he's going to be Gabbert.

Here's the problem with over-drafting quarterback. You get forced into taking a quarterback too high, then the crowd naturally wants to see him play because he's a top draft pick.

Nice Catch-22.

If you take a quarterback at the top of the draft, you better make sure he's battle-ready. The press and the fans are going to run you out of town if you don't play the rookie.

We don't develop quarterbacks in Jacksonville, we kill them.

Assuming Gus Bradley is a bit more mentally tough to not give into fan and media pressure I think Bortles would be an excellent fit here if given time to develop. I honestly believe if given time to develop he will be at top 10 QB in this league.

Its unfortunate we just happen to have fans (especially on this board) who feel like we NEED to start a rookie QB.

I'd be OK with Bortles in a trade back - but he didn't inspire much confidence with his media appearance at the combine today.  He 's a young kid with a bunch of cameras in his face though, so I'll cut him some slack.  He'll be a bit of a project - and I don't know he'll be a franchise QB or anything - but he'll be better than Henne in short order.

Not my first choice and not a top 5 pick IMO, but he's got some interesting potential.

Why didn't you like his media session?

He just seemed uncomfortable and a bit unsure of himself.  That's normal under the circumstances - but you just have to hope he won't feel that way when he needs to lead his team to a come from behind victory in a hostile stadium full of 65,000 sceaming fans.

Considering his performance in his first (and UCF's only) BCS win I don't see that as an issue.
