Warhop does have a very good reputation and was the ONLY coach Meyer retained. If Robinson is as bad as some on this board have said, do you really think he would franchise him? I still expect them to go after Trent Williams and if they can't get him they have some insurance now. They will also draft a left tackle in rounds 1 or 2 to eventually replace Cam.

It's more of an insurance policy type move than anything else. What if we can't get Trent Williams? What if we're forced to reach for a LT?  This just gives us more options at the position, and we're not obligated to pay him beyond this year.  Smart move.

Exactly, a good move by the front office.  If we didn't tag Cam and misses on Trent we would be force to reach for a tackle in the draft

Let's just completely overpay a LT that is so bad, he's not even on peoples top 100 available free agents. Lawrence could get badly hurt behind these OT's and if he does, it's on Meyer and Baalke's heads.

No. He's not. He's considered one of the worst. That's why so many people on this board were disappointed when they kept him. He failed to develop either one of our OT's.

But how is that protecting us? If we miss out on Williams, we could find another LT in the draft. At this point I would trust a 7th round OT over either one of our OT's. We know what they are and they suck! I'd rather take a risk on new guys, any guys, as long as they aren't what we have now. At least that would show you are at least trying to get better. This is just like settling for below average play. We had one of the lowest ranked OT tandems in the NFL. This is not protecting us in any way, shape or form.

I'd rather put a 7th round OT in the starting spot than to bring Robinson back. The 7th rounder is an unknown. Robinson isn't. We know Robinson sucks and the fact that Jawaan Taylor sucks even worse, makes the OT position even more dire.

As horrible as Taylor is, do you really see this happening? Do you realistically see them moving Robinson to RT and benching Taylor? I don't.

A good O-Line is key in a young QB's development. If they can't protect the QB on the edges, it can make a young QB gun shy and ruin their self confidence.

Assuming the money offered is similar, Trent Williams has expressed a desire to return to the 49ers and many have speculated that he'd prefer a playoff caliber team to chase a possible ring. The move to lock up Cam is insurance for the LT spot. With the tag being around $14m or so, not the $17-18m as bantered about earlier this off season, the cost is not prohibitive and only a one year commitment. If the Jags are able to land a better LT in FA or the draft, it does not prevent the team from sliding Cam into another position.

I would also assume that if the Jags find a better alternative, they could/would pull the tag if not yet signed. Would it be wonderful to sign Trent Williams or get a top OT in the draft? ....of course. However, it is not in the Jag's absolute control for either of these. The tag for Cam is just smart to lock in a "floor" at the position.

Did you watch any of the games last season? Our QB's were constantly getting pressured off both edges. I don't need some "experts" telling me our OT's aren't bad. I saw them play. My eyes showed me how bad they were. It's undeniable. Anyone who says otherwise is either blind or lying.

I would be freaked out if this was a Luke Joekel scenario.  These guys are meh but not a train wreck.  Have to see what shakes out the rest of the way.

I suspect it's more likely a negotiating ploy or at worst a fallback measure. The chance of Cam actually playing under the tag are remote. They could resign him to a more reasonable deal or they could sign and trade or they could (more likely) remove the tag and let him walk after they've assured themselves of someone qualified to take his place.

I was praising Norwell too.  But if he doesn't take a pay cut, he may not be here.  If not, he will need to be replaced.

While I think the run blocking might suffer, I think Robinson could improve pass protection inside.
