A decent length video on the Jaguars draft needs.

We arguably got one top 5 player at his position in FA, and maybe not even that. With the most money and the most needs. We needed to make 3-4 splashes and we made a couple of ripples. Don't need to derail the draft talk with FA talk, it just struck me instantly how poorly we did in FA. Carry on with draft talk sorry. I would have mixed feelings about Etienne at either 25 or 33. I really like him as a player, and I'm old fashioned in that I have few, if any qualms about taking a qualified RB in the first round. Watching video of Trevor Lawrence made me realize how often he checked down to Etienne. IF Bevell will do what he can to help TLaw transition easier to the NFL, it wouldn't surprise me if Etienne is a consideration at either spot. But our needs beyond RB are so big and so many, to me spending that high a pick on Etienne would be almost wasteful. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

I thought it was a good discussion, and I agree with a lot of what they said. I don't think splash moves in free agency would have gotten us very far this season. And because we didn't break the bank on free agents this season, we still have that money and cap space in our pocket for the future. I also think with picks #25, 33, and 45, a combination of Moehrig, Friermuth, and Etienne in whatever order would make a lot of sense. Also an OL at one of those spots for depth would make a lot of sense.
That was a good watch, thanks for posting. The 25th pick for me is the most interesting. There will likely be a couple players available that slide for one reason or another, and will be interesting to see what strategy we take.
I know we still have some holes on defence, but I’d be happy with the top 4 picks all being offence. Get them all in there with TL and let them grow as a unit. I wouldn’t be surprised if they take Etiene just for the familiarity for TL, but hopefully we can do that at 45 (or maybe a slight trade up) I need to do some research on the TE’s as I’m not familiar with any of them really (03-30-2021, 06:14 AM)Ordar Wrote: That was a good watch, thanks for posting. I like Eitienne as a player, and I thought he was the best RB in the country last year. But what started selling me on the possibility/likelihood of him being taken at 25 or 33 is seeing how often TL utilized him in the passing game, and how he'd turn little dump off passes into huge gains. I don't know if he meets Meyer's speed requirement, nor can I speak credibly on his pass protection yet, but he seemed quite the reliable backfield mate for TL. As unexpected a surprise as Robinson was, one of the best surprises was his ability and willingness in pass protection. In fact, i think he was the most reliable pass protecting RBs we've had since MJD. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Etienne would be a fine choice in the late 1st for a team that is pretty much complete and has the luxury of a shiny toy to put it over the top. An RB in the first round for a team that is just starting it's rebuild is beyond stupid.

An RB in the first round for a team that is just starting it's rebuild is beyond stupid. Not sure where I would stand on the issue of when the appropriate time to pick a RB in the 1st round. At face value, what you say above makes a ton of sense. But I can recall a couple of teams who managed to rebuild properly, the Jimmy Johnson era Cowboys and the Polian era Colts. Jimmy Johnson's first year in Dallas resulted in a 1-15 record. His second year, he took Emmitt Smith in the first round. With the Colts, Polian's colts finished 3-13 in 1998, Peyton Manning's first year. They had Marshall Faulk on the roster. In 1999, they traded Faulk away, and then drafted Edgerrin James in the top 5, a spot ahead of Ricky Williams. While neither team took a 1st round RB in the first year, I'm not sold their second year represented near completion of the rebuild, nor am I sold that taking either RB in the first round was a poor choice. Now you could argue the Colts were far more of a finished product than our Jaguars. By 1999, the Colts had Manning at QB, Tarik Glenn at LT, and Marvin Harrison at WR. Jacksonville is far less settled at LT than Indy was at the time. You could also argue that Aikman and Manning had completed their rookie years before their teams invested in the 1st round RB the next year. But on some level, I don't see how a stud rookie RB somehow helps a young QB less in his rookie year than he would in his second year. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

This will be an unpopular opinion, but I fully expect Cam and Taylor to play significantly better this year.
A) because we shouldn’t be behind in games constantly and be forced into passing every down B) TL is a much much better player than anything we’ve had before and will make everyone look better. C) I expect the scheme and playcalling to be much better. On the TE front, people don’t seem overly high on Freiermuth. Any reason for that? Isnt he the second best TE in the draft?

I'm just thinking- UM wants more offensive speed, more home-run ability, we need another running back, and Etienne is an elite RB. Plus, as you have mentioned, Etienne was one of TL's favorite safety valves at Clemson. And, it would be nice to get TL some more weapons. We don't currently have a player like Etienne. It all lines up. I give it a 20% chance we pick Etienne at #25 or #33. (03-30-2021, 03:40 PM)Ordar Wrote: On the TE front, people don’t seem overly high on Freiermuth. Any reason for that? Isnt he the second best TE in the draft? He's just fine across the board. He's a decent, but not great blocker. He's not fast or agile. The few NFL caliber LBs he faced covered him extremely easily. He's in the 50-75 range on most of the big boards I've seen, and I think that is even a little too high. James Robinson was about the only bright spot on this team last season and some people still want to draft another RB in the 1st round... Yuck. I like Etienne and all, but that'd be a bad pick.

In my opinion, Etienne would be a McCaffrey type of RB. One of McCaffrey's great strengths is route running and pass catching. I think there will be several quality picks at picks #25 and 33. Etienne is just one of them.
