Taking advantage of the OL class
|
We have all read what Meyer and staff seem to think about the state of our OL and if that is true it appears unlikely they'll decide to address it early in the draft.
By all accounts this is a very good and deep OT class and there are quality OL on the board. Looking at our OL situation, even if they say they like the OL, I think they should also start looking at the future. We have had good interior OL play but as far as I'm concerned our starting OTs were among the worst in the league. That will improve if we manage to be closer in games with less obvious passing situations and better QB play...still I wouldn't bank on them suddenly getting that much better at pass protection when we'll need it. On top of that, even if they like the OL as it is, most of our OL will hit FA at the end of the season: Cam Robinson is on the franchise tag, Norwell restructured and will be FA at the end of the year, Cann will be a FA, Shatley will be a FA (again, lol), Will Richardson will be a FA, Linder will reach the final year of his deal. Obviously we can/will resign one or more of them eventually but still at the moment they are going to hit FA. We will basically have only Linder, Taylor (who hasn't looked good at all) and Bartch who is still developing and that hopefully will take another step this season. How do you expect the team to go attack the OL position during this draft? And what would you do instead? Beside the top group of OTs are there other developmental players you are targeting in the mid-lower rounds? Not strictly offensive tackles but guards and centers too. This is exactly what I said about a week ago in another post. As much as Meyer and Baalke seem to like our offensive line, they have to be cognizant of the fact that they are all on contracts that expire very soon- some of them in one year, some of them in 2 years. At the very least, we need to start up a pipeline of developmental offensive linemen. That's what I would do. What do I expect them to do? I have no idea.
I agree completely with both of you.
Now what the team will/won't do at OL will depend, in part, on how much influence Baalke has. They have said they will place an emphasis on value over need. Meyer has said-at least in free agency-that he would place an emphasis on players he or the coaches know. Finally, one of the criticisms of Baalke is that he took too many draft chances on guys coming off serious knee injuries. Combining all of this, I could see guys like Wyatt Davis or Landon Dickerson-both of whom are coming off of knee injuries-be targets in round 2 or round 3-even over guys like Friermuth or Jordan who represent a bigger need. https://www.si.com/nfl/jaguars/draft/wit...he-jaguars One issue with this article: It asserts we addressed OL in free agency and that it's no longer as big a need. Did I miss something? As for what I would do. I can't say I would be necessarily opposed to the team taking either of the two OL I mentioned above. Assuming their recovery from the knee injuries is going well, they would represent very good value in that second to 3rd round area. But in addition to that, I would want at least one of the T positions addressed. If nothing else, such a strategy would dramatically improve the depth along the offensive line and enable us to transition into having new starters next year by giving those guys "redshirt" years. Possibly, these guys could unseat incumbent starters. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

I agree with you 110%. We must address the O-Line. Personally, I totally disagree with Meyer's assessment of our current O-Line. I believe our OT's, flat out suck! While the OT class as a whole, is pretty good, the LT class is very top heavy and there are a ton of teams ahead of us who will probably snatch up all the good players with their first rounders, so I don't see us selecting a good LT. I do think we address the RT position with one of our 2nd round picks. Jawaan Taylor has been awful, ever since he was drafted and seems to be getting worse. I would LOVE to take Spencer Brown in round 2. I see him as a plug and play RT with tremendous feet and quickness. Something Taylor does not have at all. I believe the team will take either Jalen Mayfield or James Hudson though. I am NOT a fan of either though. Mayfield lacks quickness and Hudson needs to be moved inside to OG. He was terrible in pass protection at the Senior Bowl and looked completely overwhelmed. Personally, I would use the #25 and #33 picks to move up in round 1 to get either Slater or Darrisaw for the left side, but if that can't be done, I take Spencer Brown at pick #33 to play RT. I believe he would easily beat out Taylor right away. I'd also look to add a developmental LT in the later rounds of the draft to play swing Tackle. Maybe a player like D'ante Smith of ECU, Josh Ball of Marshall, Jack Snyder of San Jose State or Kayode Awosika of Buffalo. None of them are ready to start, but they have upside and might be ready by 2022. I'd add an OG/C type in the middle rounds to take over for Linder and Shatley in 2022. I really like Ben Cleveland of Georgia, Robert Hainsey of Notre Dame or Kendrick Green of Illinois. In the last round, I might even try P.J. Burkhalter of Nicholls State.
You know I've been banging the table that we need to replace both OTs. I would be taking one of the second tier Jenkins/Cosmi/Eichenberg/Radunz guys at 25 or 33 and then also taking one of the developmental Smith/Brown/Hudson in the 3rd. I'd trade up into the 3rd to make sure I got one even.

From a 53 man roster perspective, what do you think the Jaguars do if they take an offensive tackle and a guard in the draft? Do they cut Richardson and Shatley? Do they cut one of the current starters? Do they go with 9 or 10 offensive linemen? If the latter, it would mean having to scale back depth somewhere else.

I think they'd cut Richardson before Shatley. Not sure about the numbers for myriad reasons. Some of the talk on NFL Network has been about the 17th game, and if they will adjust the roster sizes accordingly. Will they have all 53 active on game day, or will they have rosters higher than 53? Will they adjust the IR rules further? Are the backups on the OL better players than the backups at other positions? How important are the other positions in the schemes? How were these roster allocations handled in SF under Baalke, with Bevell in Detroit and Seattle, and with Cullen in Baltimore? What does Meyer have to say? Too many unknowns at this point to give a good answer to your questions. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Richardson was drastically miscast by this team. He's a pure RT and they've tried to turn him into a swing Tackle and given Robinson's injuries he's spent most of his time on the left side where he has been overwhelmed. Swing Tackles need to be college Left Tackles. Few guys who have played their entire college career on the right side, can make the move to LT. My thing is despite his experience at RT, it doesn't seem to translate into physical play. If there were a finesse RT, it would be him. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
I was watching some highlight videos on Youtube. This one stuck out to me, probably because the commentary is so much fun!
