I'm still scratching my head over the Hyde signing.  He didn't do anything when he was here the first time.  He's nothing special.

Etienne caught a lot of screen passes from TL.  I think he'll catch a lot of passes for us.  Throwing to the RB is a great way to get the ball out of the QB's hand quickly and avoid punishment.  He'll be like Christian McCaffrey.

This guy is an exciting running back. I'm not sure what this does to Robinson though. We are loaded at rb. I'm hoping this rookie could be like a fred taylor with all that speed he has. I would say it's time to draft a lot of defense now and maybe a line man.

I'd use the term "expert" very loosely, but there was one of the mock videos posted on here with him and somebody else and they both said that Etienne should be the pick.

Either way, it was a bad pick and we all know that (at least anybody with any sense). Drafting a RB at 25, when you just had rookie UDFA RB put up top 5 numbers, while missing two games on a trash [BLEEP] Offense is a bad look. There's no way around it. Good player, but a terrible pick for a team with gaping holes nearly everywhere besides at RB.

But it's not surprising considering Urban said he listened to Belichick when it comes to drafting (who's awful at it btw) and relies on the Al Davis motto of speed first.

Honest question to those who followed UM closely.

How often did he utilize his RBs out of the backfield as receivers at UF or OSU?

For that matter, how often did Bevell utilize backs as receivers in Seattle and Detroit?

While  looking up clips of TL, I noticed he used Etienne quite a bit as a receiver.  Nothing overly fancy...dumpoffs mostly.

Is utilizing RBs out of the backfield an integral part of UM's offensive approach, Bevell's offensive approach, or might it be something they are incororating from Clemson's offense to ease TL's transition to the pros?

If they place a heavy emphasis on utilizing RBs in the passing game, then perhaps the pick makes more sense.

Considering just about all of the players people were clamoring for at 25 are still on the board at 33 and I don't have the hostility towards taking a RB early that most of you have, I'm not as irritated by this pick as some of you.  But it leads to some questions, though.

Knowing how much RBs are used in the passing game in this offense will answer many of them.

I like the Etienne pick a lot.  Although I thought he might be available at 33, when Najee Harris went off the board, there was a good chance Etienne would also go in the first round.   We need more than one starting quality running back, and Carlos Hyde isn't it.  Etienne is a very dynamic running back who can score on any play.  In addition, he's a tried and true weapon for TL.  I see him as another Christian McCaffrey.  

I think it's a very good pick.  Pre-draft, this was one of the players I wanted.

Najee is a bellcow back, though. Is Etienne going to be a 3-down back? If we were just looking for a change of pace, those guys can be had WAY later in the darft.

I hope this pick doesn't end up biting us in the rear, but I have a feeling it will be more defining of this regime than the TLaw pick.

Yeah, because Tampa Bay could actually use a lead back. We already had one. All we needed was a complimentary back with speed and hands and those guys could be had later in the draft. This was a reach pick for us.

All the analysis on the pick say he’s a great player, drafted in the right part of the draft, they just don’t like the pick because it’s not a need.

That assumes that Robinson stays at the same level as last season
That assumes we’re running a conventional 1 back offence
That assumes Robinson doesn’t get injured
That assumes we were picking need over the BAP on our board.
That ignores the chemistry/comfort he has with Trevor

If Etienne performs like CMC in Carolina then it’s a great pick. The 3 players most people wanted are still there at 33. I personally wouldn’t have drafted him there, but I would have been fine with taking him at 33, so at the end of the day it’s a wash. He’s an exciting offensive weapon. I’m all for stacking the offence. If the offence puts up loads of points, the defence is going to be facing obvious passing situations a lot of the time.

You're not taking into account that Etienne needs to get to the corner to get in the clear and make long runs. Our OT's are terrible run blockers. Robinson found success, because he ran in between the Tackles and utilized the interior which is undoubtedly the strength of the O-Line.

Meyer wanted speed. He had said that many times. Etienne brings speed. A lot of it. Plus he is Trevor's boy. Super, extra bonus. Gotta keep Trevor happy and Etienne will do that. I was shocked with the pick but I love the player so I won't be mad at the pick.

About the bolded part- that is complete and total horse manure. 

Since 2005, here is a breakdown of the RBs taken in the first round who became 1,000 yard rushers: 

RD 1  - 55% 15/27
RD 2  - 29% 11/38
RD 3  - 16% 6/37
RD 4  - 7% 3/45
RD 5  - 7% 3/42
RD 6  - 4% 2/46
RD 7  - 2% 1/51

Case closed!  

Sure, you can find a RB in the later rounds, just like you can find a QB in the later rounds (Tom Brady), but like any other position, you'll have the best result if you try to pick the best one.

Like I showed in the post above this one, RBs taken in rounds 3 and 4 are generally crap.  RBs taken in round 1 are generally very good.
