It really wasn't a planned protest on her part -- it was impromptu disgust at the thought of standing there with the Anthem playing (as is the long tradition in all things Olympic).

Aftwards, she said she was "pissed" and said ""But I don't really want to talk about the anthem because that's not important. The anthem doesn't speak for me. It never has.''

So it was just more of a total expression of how she feels about the country, and always has, not a designed statement.

The Tokyo Olympics have gotten out in front of it by saying no athletes will be punished for demonstrations of disrespect or non-participation in anthems.

I'm not sure that's wise, as it could cause international incidents if athletes start doing things during other countries' anthems. There's all sorts of combos involving China, Iran, Israel, Middle-Eastern countries, the Koreas, etc. that could spark an incident.

But for the most part, I think it's mostly an American problem. Because our country has been the Greatest Country for so long, most of this wokism was released into the matrix to try to take down America. Other nations won't allow someone to simultaneous compete for their country and hate it at the same time.

The odd thing is, we're so strong that we can take it. Everybody still knows the facts. We're like the Dark Knight to the world's Gotham.

I try to have empathy, to understand someone's perspective even if I disagree with it. But this is one where I cannot answer the rhetorical question. I truly don't get it.

I guess money or fame? There is no pro hammer throwing so you've pretty much got to compete for your country to try to make a go of it.

Agreed --- I think most of these America-haters don't really like another country more. They don't intend to leave this country, they intend to take it over. The new power base is a coalition of ruling whites that go along with the Woke religion (of course not confessing their own sins, but constantly confessing the sins of others), and preside over a majority voting bloc that has been convinced each member is an oppressed minority of some sort (broadly defined).

Agreed. If this was any other sports event and people want to protest, whatever, but these are the Olympic Trials. This is a whole different ballgame. You are there to represent this country and if you throw shade at the nation you represent on such a grand stage, you have no business being there. Why even participate in the U.S. Olympic trials if you think it's so bad here? Olympic rules are pretty lax when it comes to which country you can represent. Just go back in your family tree and represent some country your ancestors were from. I've seen that done several times. As a U.S. citizen, I don't want anyone representing us that behaves like they hate our country. They can go somewhere else.

It definitely is a bit of a different ballgame now that this type of protesting is being done in regards to the Olympics. When Colin Kaepernick first started getting attention regarding the anthem in 2016 that was right after the the Rio Olympics had ended. So we didn't really deal with that issue arising in the Olympics. But now five years later, it could become an issue in this global event. I do wonder how other countries will respond/view US athletes that may do this. And if any of them will try to do their own protest if they disagree with certain things that are going on in their countries. (And if so what potential ramifications that could have.)

And this is a bit different than protesting the anthem here in America, at various sporting events. You're not predominantly representing the USA if you're protesting the anthem during an NFL game or a WNBA game. But you are literally representing America in the Olympics, so I can see how this issue could ruffle even more feathers.

I have experienced discrimination. Everyone has, its not institutionalized nor is it widespread. And it hasn't been for a long time. I AM OVER IT!!!!

Racism is 100% institutionalized. Hell even the NFL was giving black players lower starting scores for mental aptitude just simply because they were black. Which led to many of their claims being denied for brain trauma after their career was over.
