Phil Simms doesn't believe there is a franchise QB in this draft

He could very well be right. As much as I would like to have Manziel on our squad. I don't really want to spend the #3 pick on him.....

I would rather get Clowney or Watkins if possible. But like I have been saying a lot lately I just want the FO to take the best available football player when we pick, and hopefully that guys fills a big need as well.

He loses a lot of credibility when he states that Geno Smith would be the best QB in this year's draft.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

He may be right, who knows at this point, although i bet 1 or 2 come through.  Maybe not who we think?  I liked last years approach and hope they do the same if they don't see a franchise guy.  Build up the team first, then jump when opportunity is there.  The last thing this team is a reach and another wasted high pick.

Kinda wish they'd go after Freeman instead of Henne as a stop gap, he may add a little more excitement in the stop-gap period.  Just a thought.

Teddy Bridgewater is twice the QB that Geno is before he even steps foot onto an NFL field.

Revisionist history is nice but that wouldnt have been the prevailing theory this time last year.  Go back and read this board a year ago today and you'd think Geno was the second coming.

Not really.  Nobody that I can remember compared Geno to Manning, or even Luck.  Last years' draft was fairly weak at the top.  People wanted Geno, sure.  But nobody acted like he was great.

Are you kidding?  The Teddy love right now maybe... just maybe... barely eclipses that of Geno last year.  Hey lets hear about Geno's day against Baylor again.  Thank God Teddy never threw for 700 yards and 7 TDs in one game.

I just don't know what it is that doesn't say franchise qb about Bridgewater. Accruracy, composure and pocket presence are things that this guy has in spades and are the most difficult things to coach in a QB. Arm strength isn't great but its definitely good enough. I just don't get how people can write this guy off

I've sort of hinted at the same thing for a while now, with the rare exception of Manziel and Bridgewater, but only those 2, because so many teams are so desperate for QBs.

But to prove, or at least substantiate Simms point a little, do this little exercise in your mind.

Everyone in this thread, take your top 4-QB picks this year, all of which most assume will go in the 1st or 2nd rounds, and are thus franchise guys in your thinking.

Let's put them in this order for me.

1)Manziel

2)Bridgewater

3)Bortles

4)Carr

Now, just for fun, add to that list: Jameis Winston, Mariota, Hundley, and any other guy you want to from next years presumed draft. And at least for me, the list changes pretty dramatically.

1)Winston

2)Manziel

3-4 tied)Mariota/Bridgewater

5)Hundley

6)Bortles

7)Carr

Bridgewater would no longer be one of the concensus 'Big 3' QBs IMO, while Bortles and Carr would barely be third rounders.

The point? There are currently QBs still in college that are better NFL-prospects than some of these draft picks this year. And that usually doesn't happen. This year's different though, and Simms' got a point. And perhaps some QBs have been elevated to 'Franchise QB' in a down year, when any other year they'd be a lock for the 3rd-round.

I'd still take Teddy or Johnny at #3 all day any day, but Simms point remains at the very least valid.

I want 3 players. Clowney, Bridgewater, Manziel. Jaguars have the number 3 pick. Just give me one of those 3 at 3, and I'm happy.

Considering how hard it is to find true franchise guys Simms is likely right, but he's just going with the odds. There's still a good chance that one of the guys who isn't a fully known quantity goes on to be a franchise guy. Caldwell's job is to figure out which one it is.

If you do that then rank them from Lucks draft to 2015. Then see where people rank.

I dont see it either. He has no known attitude problems , is insanely coachable , already possess the tough to gain QB traits , has good size and was asked to do 10x what every other top QB had to do in terms of running an offense and making reads / going through progressions.

Johnny Jaguar your 2nd list is ridiclous. Mariota and Bridgewater should easily be well over Manziel. Mariota alone is a better runner than Manziel with a stronger arm and better size. Neither are great at reading defenses or adjusting plays so thats a wash.

In terms of reading defenses , making adjustments , moving the chains, finding the holes in zones, beating tight man coverage with touch throws , and controlling the game there isnt a QB in Bridgewaters class period. Only ones like that in the last 10 years in college are Rodgers,Luck,Wilson, Rivers, maybe Eli Manning and Matt Ryan. Every other guy picked in the first has had questions about their game.

It's very odd. A lot of people are going to look back and say "how did I miss this?".

I loved Geno, still do, but teddy is a much much better prospect.

I highly diagree with you list.  Mine would go something like:

1. Winston/Bridgewater

2. Manziel

3. Mariota

4. Bortles

5. Hundley

6. Carr

Personally, I feel like Simms has gone soft in the head.  From the broadcast booth this year he would say stuff that just didn't make any sense, to the point where it was obvious his boothmate was irritated and had to correct him often.

Or, the other folks could be right and you end up asking yourself how you missed again.
