After seeing back in March that Romeo Okwara didn't seriously consider contract offers from other teams because he wanted to remain Lions teammates with his younger brother Julian, part of the Jets decision could easily relate to what you mentioned.

Quinnen Williams is headed for a big payday as early as next year. If Quincy Williams is still with the Jets, maybe Quinnen would be willing to to sign a contract extension that would be a little more favorable to the Jets?  In the meanwhile, Quincy Williams can at least contribute heavily to the Jets Special Teams.

So you can't trade a pick next year for a player this year? Lol. So you can't package multiple picks (we have 4 6th's & 2 7th's) to move up to the 5th etc.?  Our 5th round Safety from 2020 (Daniel Thomas) made the team, is a better safety than Wilson and is a ST's ace. That part of your disagreement has 0 logic to it. What does a WR have to do with a Safety? I get that he's a 6th round pick, but that has 0 relevance to the Safety position group, also not every pick hits but as I mentioned with Daniel Thomas, a player of Wilson's caliber or better can be found in the late rounds pretty easily.

Wilson has been in the league since 2016, Wingard has only played 2 seasons; obviously Wilson has more career snaps ... Wingard is a markedly superior ST's player, even on half the total snaps anyone who watches football can see that. Not sure Wingard survives the waiver claims in the next few days I agree with you there, not really all that enamored with Wingard either.

Wilson has 28 career starts at Safety and really hasn't shown much. I liked what I saw out of Daniel Thomas both last year and in preseason, but that's a moot point as Rudy Ford is the 3rd safety/big nickel and likely next man up in case of injury. Cisco can play both FS & SS, if Jenkins goes down I'd kick Cisco to FS and have Ford play SS. 

Wilson isn't better than Cisco or Jenkins. His cap hit is the highest among the rest of the backup safeties, and he's the worst ST's player of that bunch. This really isn't rocket science.

Yes, let's trade away a bunch of future draft picks in order to get an average safety when we could have just NOT CUT an average safety.  I agree, this really isn't rocket science.

Our sixth rounder being cut is relevant because you claimed that you can find an average player with a sixth round pick.  Do you need me to show you a list of our sixth round picks in history?  Obviously there's going to be the occasional exception, but the players who I would consider "average" are clearly in the minority.  Many didn't even make the team and the careers of most of the ones who do were short lived with minimal contributions.

Salaries is a red herring.  While you can argue Wilson is "more", his salary isn't significant and we are well under the cap.

While Cisco maybe "can" play free safety, he's more suited to strong safety.  I don't want one injury to weaken two positions.  Ford is here for special teams and emergency backup.  I would much rather Wilson(FS)/Cisco (SS) than Cisco(FS)/Ford(SS).  You claim Thomas is better at playing safety than Wilson, but Wilson started over him last year.  You are also trying to make a false choice.  I would keep both.  It's not Wilson versus Thomas.  It's Wilson versus Wingard.  The comparison here isn't even close.  Wingard is an absolute disaster at safety.  The couple of yards of average field position he might generate on special teams doesn't outweigh his complete incompetence on defense if injuries occur.

The 4 other safeties on the roster (lets put Wingard aside who made the team for ST's only and is likely to be waived in the coming days) are better than Wilson, Thomas & Ford are both at least average and Thomas has upside. if we need another player of wilson's caliber we can find one with a late round pick, guys like wilson are a dime a dozen. 

Jalen Camp not making the team at a loaded position of strength is not an indictment of every 6th rounder Jacksonville has ever made; especially because he's not a safety he's a WR. the last late round safety we drafted made the team which kinda supports my argument on this.

You can roll over capspace to future years, no reason to burn up space or sacrifice future flexibility for an average player who isn't going to start. It's not a red herring it's a very important part of the big picture and long term health of our cap/team.

Cisco played Free Safety and a ton of single high at Syracuse, he can play that spot at a high level; rather invalid criticism. So Wilson a 6 year vet started over a ROOKIE, that rookie has improved, we have not seen Thomas's celing while we've likely seen Wilson's. 

I don't think Wingard is here much longer, they're going to use the spot on a waiver claim, not worth debating Wilson vs. Wingard bc Wingard will probably also be cut.

What are the obligations of the team to a claimed player? Is it similar to a PS pickup where he must be on our active roster for a period of time?

If we have no obligations to claimed players, I am really confused by the lack of claims. Even if they are just placeholders for veterans as you describe.

If you claim a player on waivers, the claiming team assumes their current contract. You could in theory cut them the day after you get them on the roster, it may trigger dead money or other clauses in the contract etc. but there's no moratorium for how long they have to be on the active roster; iirc that is restricted to signing someone off the practice squad from another team, where they MUST be on your 53 man roster for a period of 3 weeks.

"If a practice squad player is signed to the active roster, he will receive a minimum of three weekly paychecks, even if he is released before spending three weeks with the new team."

that's the exact quote from the bylaws. So in theory you could release the signed PS player sooner, but they're still going to be paid for 3 weeks anyway so you might as well just wait it out.

Thank you for clarifying the PS thing, I knew there was a three-week rule somewhere, but wasn't getting any results in my searches. IIRC that rule is to prevent teams from hiring a current or soon to be opponent's guy off the PS just to get some playbook tidbits from them and ditch them after the game.
