Jags FA talk and Signings

(This post was last modified: 03-14-2022, 07:06 PM by tomfin2022. Edited 1 time in total.)

Hey…we’re overpaying for good players in free agency. That’s a big step up for us after overpaying for average and below average players in free agency more offseasons than not in the last 10 years.

As for Baalke, I’m a fair person. Yes, I wanted him fired In the the worst way, but this has been one heck of a haul, so I’m giving credit where credit is due. The Jaguars have been the type of team that can’t reel in a fish in a stocked pond. Yes, the pond was stocked again with our cap space, but you still gotta reel ‘em in, and Baalke did.

Honestly it's very similar to what Robert Woods got so really just depends on if you think he can play as well as Woods.

He's no Robert Woods. I wish he was.

Does Evan Engram and Dan Arnold make our TE room good enough. Or do we still need to invest draft capital in that position?

I like it. They were pretty horrible on defense overall last year but there were quite a few games where they were put on skates and pushed backwards in the ground game.

The Jets absolutely handled them in a one score game. Then they got bulldozed the following week by New England. Same thing happened on the road in another one score game with the clots earlier in the year.

They have to get better against the run. Your divisional opponents feature prominent runningbacks like Taylor and Henry. Adding one of last year's top run stuffers in conjunction with last year's league leading tackler at ILB bodes very well in their favor.

Also. We don't know if Caldwell is going 3 - 4 or 4 - 3 just yet. They may need a strong pairing at NT/DT for specific sets. They might also be looking at 3 safety sets at some point. The more big men up front the better. Especially in this division. The clots are in the market for a QB. Thus leaning that much more on Taylor.

I thought it had been confirmed we were sticking with a 3-4. If not, why did we hire an ILB coach and an OLB coach? It would make no sense to have 2 different position coaches, if we're switching back to a 4-3.

He has been hated but so far he has improved this roster.

This year though, last year he was crap. We still have the draft too, so... We'll see.

IMO, he looks closer to 230-235 lbs than he does 215 lbs. I'm guessing we're gonna use him in a lot of nickel packages where he serves as a LB/SS hybrid to cover TE's. If that is the case and he can keep us from being torched by opposing TE's like we have in the past, I won't complain at all. I'm gonna give this one a chance and see what he can do. He certainly put up some impressive stats last season. We just need to add a thumping ILB to play next to him on the inside.

He was 230lbs at his Pro day and I doubt hes gotten smaller since being in the league for 4 years. Here are his Pro day numbers. Very athletic. Don't know where the 215lbs listing comes from.

This makes much more sense. I know he looked a lot bigger in the Falcons highlight reel I saw. When you google his name, he comes up listed at 215 lbs. I assumed that was his current weight. This could be our best signing so far. I got so sick of us getting burned by opposing TE's. Finally, someone who can cover them.

Even given all of the crazy high-priced contracts this off-season, I still think the Browns got screwed.   Smile

Signing Engram allows the team to go BAP, as cliche as that sounds, and not reach for a TE unless it makes sense in a particular spot. with the exception of ETN and Campbell, I liked Baalke's draft last year. He's all about "value," which is like practical BAP drafting. I think his philosophy is trying to catch players later than they were supposed to be drafted and, of course, taking risks on injured players who were projected much higher before the injuries.

We definitely draft one. Engram is a good signing, but he has a history of injuries and it's just a one year deal. I think we draft a TE and develop him for the 2023 season.

Engram was signed to a one-year deal.  I'm guessing that means that they plan to draft a tight end, but think it will take a year for them to develop.  Dan Arnold is also in the last year of his contract, although my hunch is the Jaguars try to re-sign him.

Overall what a start. I wented scerff in the draft when he came out. Our lb corps has sucked bad since poz left and the crazy one retired.

We got a legit zone buster in kirk. Pretty stoked. And if engram can stay healthy best te we have had in forever.

Don't have to over draft one, but yes.

Engram is only on a 1 year deal and has been injury prone. Arnold is post injury. Jags are also cursed with injury luck at the position, so can't have too much depth there, especially if they want to be scheme versatile.

Still kinda wish we'd snag AR-15 and just go full crazy mode today lol.

If healthy and if they can keep their drops issues in check, Arnold and Engram give us some legit speed at the TE position that we've never really had before.

I've seen a few of y'all say you were shocked at how cheap Scherff's deal was, but I haven't seen the numbers. Can you please share what you've seen?
