Jags trade for Calvin Ridley

I have no doubts he will be an impact player with Doug getting him up to speed.

This is gonna be an epic year. October of last year I would have laughed you out of the room if you told me this is where this team would be after the season. All the hype and coming off a playoff birth consisting of a home win after we clinched the division. No way any of us saw this coming. Doug is the truth. Hell get Ridley up to speed quick enough.

I’ve been working at the practice field on the construction and Doug has made it a point to make rounds once every few weeks and honestly I turn into a little fan boy every time I see him lol. This year will be epic.

That is mainly due to the fact that this thread is about Ridley not Trevor. Mods get pissy when you veer off subject too much so I try to avoid that as much as possible lol.

If I understood this correctly, don't be surprised if we draft a receiver early.

Where did you get that?  I don't see anything above that suggests the Jags are drafting a receiver.

Calvin Ridley is 28 on a 1 year contract.

If we resign him @ 29 it will cost 20 plus per year and escalate the draft pick compensation from a 3rd rd pick to a 2nd round pick.

I don’t think they are either but I think that has more to do with how weak this WR class is compared to years past.

The draft is much stronger in other areas and the Jags have clear areas they can improve on.

Oh noes!

Imagine if he plays well enough to earn a deal like that...that would be turrible.

Just last year at this time multitudes were banging the drum to pay 28yo Amari Cooper 20M a season instead of signing Kirk.

And I hope he plays well enough to earn a deal like that.

Not great news for future cap management, but very good news for our offense.
A second rounder is also tough to sacrifice, but I think most teams would give one up for three years of Calvin Ridley playing well.

Pretty sure this is one of those "good problems."

If he earns it.  We'll see.

If not, then I'd be looking for that WR in the early rounds you mentioned, only next year.

Cap room is its own capital.  Next year we will be looking @ a 29 year old receiver.  Let's say he racks in 1k yards and 8 tds.   A really good season!

It'll cost u 80 million with @ least the first two years effectively guaranteed to sign him.  @ a minimum.  It will also cost u a 2nd rounder.

If u let him walk, u lost out on a 5th rounder and a 3rd in 24. But u'll probably get a 3rd rd compensatory in 25.  So net u gave up the equivalent of a 5th in 23 and a 5th in 24 (the effective difference between the two third round picks factoring in time).  For a shot @ a 1.

I hope he's a 1 for 5 years an hes worth every penny.  When I heard 5th rounder I thought it was a no Brainerd.  Hearing all the conditions, factoring in his contract and his age I think that there's another side to the equation if ur just going to cross receiver off the board in the first three rounds.

We'll see how it all plays out. There's always loopholes in the salary cap or ways to work around it. The cap ceiling is also supposed to be seeing a pretty big facelift here soon. As early as next year. Which probably needs to happen when you're seeing guys like Geno Smith and Daniel Jones getting triple digit million dollar contracts.

If Ridley goes off in 2023 and has a Diggs, Chase or Jefferson type year? He was worth every risk and penny. If it means having to move on from guys like Engram, Jones and Kirk to keep Diggs while backfilling at this position in the draft as well or bargain shopping in free agency? So be it.

This is what Baalke gets paid the big bucks to figure out and it's ultimately going to fall back on Lawrence to elevate everybody around him, something he's already proven he can do in just one season under new leadership and coaching. Kirk, Engram and Jones all had career years under Lawrence.
