Trevor Lawrence: Franchise QB (TL Discussion, Merged Threads)

I remember during the early part of the season last year seeing comments here that Trevor looked "shook" or "rattled" or whatever. He never looked that way to me. That sounded more like projection than anything. Those posting such comments were the shook ones. He looked like a guy realizing his mistakes when he made them and accepting responsibility, but for the most part played well even early in the season. It's just a few bad throws where he tried to force things overshadowed what was going on for some because of when and where those forced throws occurred. Fans expect finished products at the QB position as soon as they step on the field, but in reality they are having to absorb and process so much in their first year or so. His learning curve was stunted from the prior year. I think he did learn some things during his first year, I just think he was a put a little off schedule by Urban.

The whole crux of the argument with CJB is about using your eyes versus checking the box score. It's clear he has no eye for talent at the QB position, because if you actually watched what Trevor does on and off the field, even in year one, you would realize you had your guy who was destined to be at least a top 10 guy in the league for many years and more likely a top 3 or top 5 guy. CJB relies solely on the box score to either determine the narrative or support his preconceived notions.

I just expect him to look like year two in the system.
Less of a slow start to season and fewer "off-weeks."

He had 10 games or so with a high degree of execution last year, I expect 14 or 15 this go 'round.

Haven't tallied how that will affect his numbers, but yards and points will increase to be certain.

Herbert got 5 years for 235 with 133 guaranteed with about 52 per year.

Burrow is up next..

then most likely Lawrence will be after this season. The earlier the cheaper.

I'd be aiming to pay him more and sign him to a longer deal like Mahomes' structure.

Trevor has hinted at wanting to help the team when the time comes, so a longer term would allow them to get creative about spreading the money out and restructuring when necessary down the road.

I'm thinking this deal will be north of 300 mil

Me too. I’m somewhere around between 325 to 350 with 140 guaranteed at something like 7 years.

I hope they do the first 10 year contract in team history and just lock him down for the next decade for 400 mill

I hope they'd at least let this season playout before making a huge comitment like that, but I agree if all stays the course i'd also love to see a long-term team friendly deal.

"Trevor can't run like Fields do but Fields throw like Trevor." - Tomlinson

Well first, Trevor's running ability is underrated. But Fields runs because he has too, he doesn't see the field as well. He has a big arm but far less accuracy. He completed 58.9% of his passes and threw for all of 2242 yards. He's going to have to do a lot of work to even become a competent starter. Lawrence is arguably an MVP candidate.

Disclaimer: I think Fields is going to work himself into a quality starter...eventually.
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

You all can call me a Lawrence hater all you want but this is just silly. Fields has no business on the top 100 list. He barely has any business starting for an NFL team.

He is clearly forgetting the stiff arm Trevor did last year to get a touch down

Plus the qb sneaks where he used his frame to dive over

I don’t think you’re a Lawrence hater.  I think just you’re a liar.

Goff, Geno Smith, Tua, Cousins, Just a list of some more QBs rated over Trev. I hope this just adds fuel to the fire for for our QB

Based on nothing but the word of people who delete posts that prove they lied.

Weird.

Fields may have the talent and arm capabilities to be a good QB, the problem with him and also the issue for Houston and Stroud is that they both played in the same brain dead offensive system in college. I have never watched QB tape quite like Fields in college. Their offensive scheme was essentially Run on 1st down, RPO on 2nd down, PA deep post on 3rd. Consistently, and because they were so stacked at the WR position he was able to consistently throw it to the first read.

Fields is basically learning how to get past his 2nd and 3rd reads in progression for the first time in the NFL, and it reflected how poor his first 2 seasons have been. This is why he almost immediately takes off and runs when he realizes option #1 is covered.

He could absolutely become a good QB one day, but his transition to the NFL was always going to be extremely difficult because he wasn't properly prepared for it at all.
