Devin Lloyd's Role?

Are these kids allowed to get better before we assign them new positions, or nah?

They'll get a chance, respectively, in year two. No doubt about it. They already committed to that path with them last year so I don't seem them changing it. I just hope we don't get stagnant results, because, if we're not seeing much improvement from these two guys by week ten? Who are we blaming here?

Is it the players? For not catching on? Is it Caldwell? For playing them out of position to begin with? Is it Baalke? For drafting them to begin with? I just worry about the short window we have here. We won't be able to keep this unit intact for year three and year four. We only lost three players in the off season, a starter in Taylor and a rotational player or two in Key and Smoot.

What happens after 2023? That's my concern with a pair of 1st RD selections still being pigeonholed into roles they don't seem to thrive in.

I've tried to give the benefit of the doubt to the coaches about playing Travon at OLB.  Still doesn't make sense.  He was a freak in college with his hand in the dirt.  At the end of last year, he was better with his hand in the dirt.  They need to stop lusting on his athleticism and let him be a DE.

I can’t wait to watch this young man develop in Teal and Black. Devin and Travon are chess pieces to be moved around to create mismatches and wreak havoc.
Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency.

1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.

This. They have the personnel for it. Hamilton and Fatukasi would be jumbo sized base run stuffers, with RRH and Smoot able to slide inside on third downs. Walker and Allen are prototypical bookends.

Yep. Walker is an athletic 43 DT. He’s going to struggle on the edge whether his hand is in the dirt, grass, or air. Lloyd is a rangey 43 weak side LB and won’t be rushing the passer off the edge, he’s too light in the britches.

Nah brah, Walker is a proto 43 RDE. Think Simeon Rice but will play the run.

Travon is elite against the run as an OLB.

I think it's the continuous history of the Jags taking defensive "tweaners" in the draft.   We like their versatility to fill multiple positions but they don't excel at any.

Mainly because they never get to learn their position. The NFL is technique more than talent; when everyone is physically elite then you have to be better and that's hard when you aren't focused on one role.

I did see a few flashes from Lloyd today in practice.

He stuck a TE on a shallow cross and forced the throw to go elsewhere (QB looked at TE first)
He was quick to the RB on a couple runs in 7/7
He made Connor and Johnson look bad in one on one RBvsLB pass pro drills.

You mean the Simeon Rice that averaged 12 sacks per season in his first 10 years?   I'm thinking more along the lines of a Tyson Alualu who averaged 3 sacks per season in his first 8 years.  Sure, Travon looks a lot more impressive doing drills in shorts and a t-shirt but the end result is pretty much the same.

Yes, the Rice who played DE from the minute he got to Arizona, not Alualu who should've been a 34 end from Day 1. Instead of this LB nonsense he should be on the line where he'll be the best.

The Walker mentions remind me, I saw him today at OLB tasked with covering a dump-off swing pass to Hasty and he was on him as the ball arrived- quickly wrapping him up for no gain (maybe a yard at best).

Hell of a catch by #40 at the 5 second mark in this clip. [BLEEP] was clean.

I think everyone would have missed that if you hadn't said anything.

He was casual about it too.

I like seeing that. Attack the ball carrier, don't chase the ball carrier. Was not pleased overall with Muma and Quarterman in that game. Looks like it will be a night and day thing with Lloyd and Oluokun in the line-up. Which, it's fair, it's the way it SHOULD be. You're looking at a 1st RD pick in Lloyd that we went up to get and Oluokon is a back-to-back NFL leading tackler. We should notice a difference in play there when they're not out there.

With that said, Muma being a 3rd RD pick was an indication to me, along with Miller coming out of this class as well, that, they have to plan on moving on from Oluokun probably after this year or next year so one of those two guys will need to step it up fast.
