Bridgewater Pro Day
|
Quote:There was a good chance that since they need a QB real bad.....good chance they take Bridgewater at #1......now, they are more likely to pick Clowney instead.....was just watching Jawarski and McShay saying how the GM's were visibly not impressed. I fear that both Clowney AND Watkins will be gone before we pick....I dont think they were ever that high on Teddy with O'Brian there. If Bortles has a bad pro day then I agree. Well, this should erase any doubts we have about Bridgewater. He's somewhere between Rob Johnson and Quinn Gray.
The issue casting a shadow over the lack of elite quarterback traits I have with Bridgewater is character. He committed to the University of Miami, then de-committed. The head coach was soon fired as South Florida was livid for losing Bridgewater. Then he verbally committed to Louisiana State University. Even had a visit set up. His own mom was convinced he would commit. Then he withdrew after he found out they were also recruiting Zach Mettenberger, meaning he would face tough competition for the starting job. He settled on Louisville because he found it the easiest place to compete for the starting quarterback job. Then the NFL Combine. Bridgewater told everybody that he was going to compete. Then he declined to do so. Most claimed he was smart. The rest of us raised red flags. The majority told us to not worry, he would show us all at his Pro Day. It was clear he was avoiding scrutiny at the NFL Scouting Combine. As the one coach at the Combine always says, "today you were under the scrutiny of NFL decision-makers. Today is nothing when compared to what scrutiny you will be under every single day once you get into the league". No ifs ands or buts about it, Teddy befuddled the pro scouts by telling them he would participate then he avoided being scrutinized by the entire NFL scouting community by getting cold feet. You can surmise that as smart if you want to, but guys that sink to a lower level of competition to make their own game look bigger are gonna fizzle out, and you can't lack the elite trait of competitiveness and expect to make it as an NFL starting quarterback. You can try to spin it as protecting his interests if you want. The fact is, he put off this as long as he could. He's poor to average as an NFL quarterback prospect. He belongs in the third to fifth round and he could possibly develop from there. There is nothing wrong about taking a quarterback at the very top of the draft as long as the prospect is consensus elite, franchise talent. Elite quarterback prospects are very rare. It means you have all the quarterback skills polished to elite level of play. Scouting experts can not poke holes in any parts of your game. It means the day you are drafted your team immediately becomes Super Bowl contenders year in and year out based entirely on you. There is a lot wrong with using the first pick as merely the opportunity to get the pick of the litter of quarterbacks. If you take a fair to average quarterback like Bridgewater at the top of the draft, it only means somebody else is going to land elite talent. What's true for Bridgewater, is also true for Manziel and Bortles. None of the so called big three are elite, franchise quarterback prospects.

I heard the Wrath of Khan was in attendance. Talk about a smokescreen if I ever heard one.

I want to applaud you for such a well thought out and informative post. I don't think anyone can come back and say TEDDY TEDDY TEDDY after this. I don't and never have wanted to have the Jags pick him up. Just something about him screams bust to me. Same feeling I had about Gabbert though try as I might to support him because he was a Jag at the end of the day.
On the flip side 2 players that really stick out to me are Manziel and Bortles. Getting one of those 2 just seems right. It's a gut thing more than anything for me. Quote:Im still waiting for all the people who dont want to pick teddy at 3 to explain why they dont like him as a QB. I've answered this question in detail in this thread and in various other threads. Its not a secret, just open your eyes. Maybe you have a problem accepting a differing opinion. Not my problem,

I didn't want him before the pro day. Now, it's a pick you run away from, imo. arcs, floats, and wobbles. No thanks.

Quote:Why? How do you know Bortles is the guy Houston has been looking at the whole time? I would have to say its bad news for pro- Teddy guysBad news for pro-Clowney guys because that likens the chance that Clowney is gone before pick #3.
THERE IS A SKELETON INSIDE OF YOU.
RIGHT NOW. THIS IS NOT A JOKE.
The Jags aren't taking a QB in the first round unless they trade down.
So - I'm not fretting Bridgewater's pro day, Bortles' floor / ceiling or Manzeil's upside. I don't think our GM is going their way at #3. Maybe, maybe Manzeil if we trade back far enough and no one reaches - but that's unlikely. Bridgewater's pro-day hasn't made me think he can't be an above average Qb in the NFL - and I wouldn't be mad if we took him - but - I definitely do have a little more reservation about taking him at #3 Quote:People just got enamored with his stats and his supposed poise. But he was playing patty cake teams while padding stats. This just got real and he shriveled under under-ware practice lights. You talkin' about a pro day? Pro day!? Quote:He doesn't have the physical tools of Gabbert. Let THAT sink in. There's no QB in this draft that has Gabbert's physical tools, so why does it matter?
Quote:There's no QB in this draft that has Gabbert's physical tools, so why does it matter?Bortles,L Thomas and Mettenberger have pretty good physical tools. I wouldn't draft any of them though. I sure wouldn't draft qb at 3 either. I'm hoping for Clowney,Watkins,Maybe Mack or trade down.
Thomas is the closest. Mettenberger only has the big arm and is Leftwich levels of immobile while Bortles doesn't have the arm.

Quote:Bridgewater never committed to LSU. Unless you're a real litigious jerkface calling his own mom a liar he pretty much was going to LSU...until he was told they were also recruiting Mettenberger. http://espn.go.com/college-football/stor...mother-ncf The commitment made sense. Bridgewater had grown close with then-coach Randy Shannon, and he would be able to play close to home. But he started reconsidering his options before Shannon was fired in November 2010. Bridgewater decommitted in early December, and it drew national attention, devastating some in the Miami community. Murphy says Bridgewater changed his mind before Shannon was let go. At one point, she thought her son would end up at LSU. But he eventually chose Louisville, in part, because he felt he could win a starting job early in his career.

He showed us more than enough through two full seasons of extremely impressive games. The combine and pro day combined mean literally less than one game of evaluation against EKU. Anyone that says otherwise is just trying to be a contrarian or wants to stir up debate. It won't change a thing for any teams either. |
